Very similar thing's just happened to me (I can't blame my Mrs!) - but scrape also extended to back panel. Any idea how much I'm looking at repair wise (Volvo dealer, I guess)?

That's a superficial scrape and dent, limited in extent and low on the car. The sheet meal is not torn or even deeply folded. If you put approved polish/wax on it, it might be hardly visible.

The next level of repair would be "paintless dent removal"--techniques in which dents are pulled out from the outside, but which might require further finishing work for a perfect job.

The old school technique would be to put filler ("Bondo") into the dent and then restore the original contour by scraping and sanding, then paint. But Bondo may be a thing of the past.

I don't tolerate a car that's a disgrace, but won't spend a lot to achieve cosmetic perfection. Modern body shops will paint a whole panel to insure that there is no discontinuity in appearance. Given the conditions is the world today this seems like extravagance to me.

If you only have car park dings that have not broken the paint you should try the invisible dent removal men. "Dent Master" etc...

I had two such dents removed from my XC90 in a matter of half an hour £100.

I had a new rear wing, door repaired and the lot resprayed. Looks perfect now but they did have three attempts! I rejected until I was fully satisfied. All done under insurance so no idea of cost. But at one point I phone a guy who said it would be about £600-ish to respray door and wing.

Yes, nasty, but that's bread and butter for a bodyshop. A year or two down the line and many will just reshape and give it a skim of filler. You still wouldn't see that it's been done. As a non expert I'd say that it was marginal if it needed new metal now but I'm only going by the picture. Comments from "the trade" welcome!
