Default Eco Driving On-Off-On-Off

Hi all

I’m new here, so please be gentle! My new (68 plate) V90 R Design was delivered yesterday and it’s looooovley. My question is this: is there any way that I can select Eco Drive mode and it starts the car in that mode each time? At the mo, I select it and happy days, but once I turn the car off and start it again, it is back in ‘normal’ mode. Is there any way to turn it on and make it stick?

Many thanks for any advice given!

Short answer is no:
The default mode for emissions/stop start etc is the comfort mode, so no matter which mode you used last it will always default to comfort mode every time you start your car.

Don’t worry about the eco-mode. I don’t find it makes the slightest difference to fuel economy compared to driving style. My XC90 D5 can achieve as low as 34mpg but as high as 45mpg depending on how its driven. 41mpg is easily achieved, while 43+ requires conscious effort or a very unhurried style on level roads.
Coasting, which is part of the Eco mode, actually uses slightly more fuel than letting the engine over-run with foot off the throttle. This is because while coasting, fuel is injected to maintain engine idle, while on a trailing throttle no fuel whatsoever is consumed. That is true for modern petrol engines as well as diesel.

I prefer individual mode. Everything set to comfort except the suspension set to dynamic. Stops the lolling around corners without being overly aggressive. Also more streamlined on cruising.

I actually achieve better mpg in eco mode. The car coasting mode does pick up further mpg costing even if the engine is using fuel to idle. Trailing the engine will still consume fuel as it has to use something when active or it would STOP. My V90 D5 AWD achieves 43mpg in eco on morning commute in eco whereas in comfort mode achieves an average of 39mpg.

It greatly depends on the road, terrain configuration etc. For the most part- I agree with quacker- from my experience I’ve actually been getting the best mpg in comfort and even dynamic mode, to my own surprise. But then again- most of my driving is highway, mostly flat roads. I find the eco mode to be the most efficient on B-roads, with varying terrain configuration (uphill/downhill..).

Default Coasting

Hi, is that a fact about the coasting, I was unaware of that. I believe the other fact that taking manual out of gear and letting engine “rest on idle” uses fuel while being off throttle does that, cuts fuel flow.
