spare headsets for rse system
I have a 2010 xc90 with rse system with dual sceens which came with 2 volvo supplied infra red wireless headsets. I have 4 children so need 2 more to keep the peace. Volvo can supply these for £110 each, but can i buy a cheaper pair myself which will be compatible?

My 2009 with single fold down screen (Volvo) comes with 2 IR headphones. Bought two more off Ebay (China made) and it is compatible. I guess must be using the standard infra red bandwidth.

I did a search for Volvo IR Headphones and I got these...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VOLVO...fAudioQ5fVideo These are from the USA (so expensive shipping), but they are NOT OEM Volvo. Reading between the lines, I think they are Chinese imports. So my guess is that most IR Headphones will work. |

I also have a 2010 XC90 and 4 kids. We solved the problem with the 2 in the middle row wearing the wireless headphones and the 2 in the back using their ipod headphones plugged into the sockets on the side pillars which can also be used to listen to the radio, CD or MP3 player connected to the car.
No dramas so far. |

I bought some Sony "Monitor" headphone, really good for kids, antitangle thick wires and plug into the side outputs in the back. Only 12 quid at tesco too!

Hmm.. XC90 2010 wrote plug into the side panel for the third row. Have not tried and not sure if my setup allows that. As far as I know, the DVD audio is not pipe thru the sound system(?). And my LCD/DVD is Volvo brand and was installed at Volvo dealership.

Mine has the DVD screens built into the front headrests with the control in the rear of the centre console. Not sure if dealer or factory fitted, but bought the car brand new last month and it was already on the car ( with sat nav, blis, 3rd row air, active headlights etc).
Just checked with the kids and they could definately get the sound through the rear headphone connectors by pressing the 'SEL' button until the DVD channel is selected. In fact they prefer the smaller iPod headphones so they don't look like dorks with the big headphones on! |

Those ebay ones look like the Pansonics I bought for my car. About £25 a pair I think. elliot2 also sells them. Mine original ones are silver Thompson's but when I bought a set of Thompson ones with the same frequency range they wouldn't work. I got the Panasonics because that's what Volvo sell for my system, but at twice the price of buying on-line.

The DVD player audio is connected to the AUX-IN of the sound system, as long as no plug is inserted into the AUX port (between the front cup holders). Plugging in a 3.5mm audio jack into the AUX port disconnects the RSE audio. On later XC90s, around 2011-ish, they added a switch to switch between AUX port and RSE. On earlier XC90s, around 2005-ish, the RSE system had a speaker switch and a amplifier to send RSE sound to the rear speakers, without changing the front speaker sound. Tip: you can get a remote control for the vehicle stereo system to allow rear seat passengers to control the entire stereo from the rear seat. Makes them feel special
