Default 2008 V70 2.4D service warning message

reposting here as first posted to the general section by mistake

I recently purchased a 2008 V70 2.4D

I have done 600+ miles in it with no obvious problems

Yesterday I got a service warning message and whilst I can cancel it by the read button on the stalk I would like to know what it refers to

The message is an engine symbol with "Engine system service required"

the seller told me it was serviced in March 2017

I just checked the service book

Last service stamped by an independent garage as 188663 miles 30th March 2017
Next service due at 206663 miles 30th March 2018

Vehicle now completed 190660 miles

I gather there is a piece of kit called Vida/Dice which I hoping someone local may have (Newquay Cornwall area) to diagnose what the warning is about

Am I stuck with having to see a dealer ? I hope not

Any help or advice appreciated

did you buy private or from a garage, if a garage you may still be within your consumer rights for them to look at it first and resolve the problem.

if private some one on here may be able to read the codes and possible reset or give you an idea of the problem.

if not find a local Volvo independent to take it to

The car would seem to have been serviced but the service reminder hasn't been reset. If not serviced by a Volvo dealer they might not have had the means to reset it. If you search on these forums you should find a method to reset it yourself.
If the message is 'Engine System Service Required' however this does require investigation. Again plenty of information on this forum...usually to do with rising oil level due to incomplete DPF regeneration

Thank you

The warning message has only just appeared as of yesterday, it wasn't on from the purchase date 11th May 2017

The seller did say he had topped up the oil and was told he shouldn't have but why would the message suddenly appear nearly three weeks later ?

I will have a further search of the archived messages to see what I can find

Exactly. Engine system service required is a fault, not the regular maintenance. Reading the error codes is the first thing to do. Since there's a message, the car should have some reason to display it. As this is engine related, it could be that a generic code reader can check the code. Otherwise it's Volvo's VIDA system you need.
