Default Wishbone replacement

Hi guys

Just about to do double wishbone replacement on my 2009 C30 D5 and was wondering if there are any “special” tools I might need?
Do I need any split pins?
Do I need to remove hub from the axle to get access to the ball joint nut?
Even better, can anyone list all sizes of sockets etc I might need?..
How long ‘should’ it take with no power tools?
Anything else I should replace while doing this? (Within reason )
I’m assuming it’s a 21mm ball joint?

Any advice is much appreciated

No split pins involved.

You don't need to remove the axle, but there is no room to get a socket on the balljoint nut so you'll have to use a big spanner.

Unfortunately I can't remember the exact size. I think mine was 22mm but it could be 21mm or even 19mm.

Once the balljoint nut is off you will need smack the side of the hub with a hammer to free up the bolt and then pry downwards using a long crowbar/prybar to get the ball joint out.

Watch this video for help regarding actual control arm replacement:

Hi,

Just to add - before you put arms into place, spray contact surfaces between rubber and metal with silicone lubricant to avoid squeaks. Once arm is in place, make sure you do not reuse bolts. You also need to use medium strength thread locker on new bolts. Tighten rear bolts to stage one values - 60Nm or 44lbf/ft. Front one should be fairly tight. Balljoint nut should be torqued to 70Nm or 52lbf/ft. Then you lift suspension to "road rolling level" and tighten rear bolts to stage two - angle tighten a further 90 degrees. Front bolt should be tighten to 175Nm or 129lbf/ft.
After replacing arms you really need to get alignment checked and corrected asap. I highly recommend Hunter alignment system, find a workshop equipped if you have a chance.

I think that would be it, good luck!

You do not need ball joint splitter, trust me. Just get a nice hammer and persuade ball joint stud with firm whack to flange. Best £10 saved, ever.
You asked how long it should take - it took me 4hrs in total with cigarette and tea breaks. I did not use power tools, but long breaker bar and torque wrench are a complete must.
