Value of a 2005 D5 AWD Executive non-runner?
Hi, at the weekend on the way to the shops, I noticed the auto gearbox making a couple of lumpy gear changes, and a couple of times it rev'd like it was in neutral. I got to the shops (no warning lights/messages), but when I got out there was a trail of transmission fluid and a puddle under the car
I had it recovered to a garage who have just phoned to say the gearbox is actually cracked, and the fluid is just pouring out. The car was probably only worth about £2500 (120K miles). I suspect we'll end up getting a replacement, but I was wondering what value there might be in the car in its current condition, before just taking it to the scrap dealers for its value in weight? As I say, it's a 2005 D5 AWD Executive model:
Anyway, thanks for any info. Spiral |

I can't put a figure on it, but I suspect you will get better value by fitting a replacement used gearbox.

You then have a decent car. As for selling it now, I would have thought you would be lucky to get more than 3 or 4 hundred quid. |

Hi, I also agree that you purchase a second hand gearbox and use the opportunity to have engine out and check such as mounts and crankshaft oil seals. I would change all oils at same time.
Think of it as an opportunity for a full service and use a good local indie garage. That's if you are happy with the rest of the car. There are loads of XC90 with gearbox problems on eBay and they rarely make much money. Suggest if you like the car then get a replacement gearbox. I would have a look at eBay as a starter and try and get at least a year warranty. Note there are few guarantees that you may not have other problems, but I guess we are all in the same boat! Hope this helps John l |

Sadly in the last 18 months the supply of uneconomically repairable XC90s has exceeded demand so scrap value seems to have dropped well below £1k.
I agree with everything said so far though - if it’s a good car then get the box sorted..... a decent specialist may have a knackered one which could donate its case?

Thanks to all for the various replies. I've still to see this crack myself, I'll do that tomorrow.
One Volvo indy can't believe it has just cracked. We've certainly not hit anything. Anyway, I may be leaning towards the getting it repaired, we certainly like the car, and has been pretty dependable otherwise. Cheers. |

Apparently the hairline crack is on the upper side of an end plate. Circled in the photos I took and have hopefully attached. There certainly seems to be a molding artefact or corrosion of some sort along that line.
The garage said perhaps there was something inside trying to get out! |

I’d get that off and get it welded.... or spares/broken boxes are circa £100 on eBay....
I’d lob an offer on this : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-xc9...IAAOSwudFdEPD5
