torque convertor...
hi make sure you get one of these and change it at the same time.....I've got a spare AW70/71 but its totally kaput and currently earning its keep as a garage door stop. There is a small identification plate on the left side (passenger side) of the gearbox you will need all of the numbers from this as your starting point.

Hi Alan,
Yes, any of the three AW71s I have for sale would do the job. The two originally advertised were not removed from vehicles by me, so I can't verify their condition, although I have no reason to doubt that they work. The third one came out of my 240, and is known-good. I'll be travelling to Edinburgh in the next couple of weeks, so that might work out nicely! I'll sell the "unknown quantity" boxes for £25 each if someone wants to experiment. The known-good box, which I'm 99% sure includes a torque converter, will be £75. It depends on whether you're a "tinkerer" who'd be willing to take a minor risk to get a bargain, or whether you'll be paying a garage to fit, etc. The only question mark about the "good" AW is whether or not I can physically get to it - it'll be well buried, knowing where it is! But that's my worry to contend with... What's the nature of the fault, by the way? Changing the torque converter is generally a good idea, but not necessarily essential if the fault lies elsewhere. cheers James

The £75 would suit me best James, i have a mechanic friend who will fit it for me I've not got the time or experience just now, but I hope to be able to do more once my kids get a bit older!
I bought the car for £450 off retro rides (I know, a few people had warned me but it's not been modded). The chap had removed the kick down cable at the throttle as he said it had broken and was causing problems. It was in good condition otherwise so bought it. It was in March, cambs so drove it home with no cable, used it for a few days until I was showing it off and was informed this wasn't a good idea! That day it stopped changing up and by the time I got it to my mechanic it was actually 'slipping' like a manual with a worn clutch. The mechanic opened the gearbox sump and found the cable had been disconnected at that end as well! So yes my inexperience has bought me a car with a fault and I have ruined the gearbox. Not a great start but this hasn't put me off and if I can get your box my mechanic says he'll fit it for £120, so if I'm back on the road for £200ish it's not bad since the car otherwise looks a good one, and if you are coming up this way soon all the better! |

I don't suppose you have the pin that links the gearstick to the shaft which goes into the gearbox. I appear to have scrapped mine with my old gearbox.
It's an m47.. |

Sorry about the delay, guys - much going on!
I don't think I do have one of those pins, sadly It might be worth asking at the dealer - it might be cheaper than you think! No spare dog dish flywheels, I'm afraid Will drop you a line shortly Aldo. There's a thread in "Support" where you can apply to get your post-count bumped, by the way. cheers James

Well that was odd - I came on here to reply before I saw your latest message, Aldo - and I didn't get around to writing the post for 30 minutes or so. What a co-incidence!
cheers James

Coming a bit late to the party - did you sell the good AW71 / Torque converter ?
I need several bit and bobs for my latest project. I need the fuel injection lower manifolding, a pair of alloy valve covers. I also need a good AW71 / torque converter / slip yoke / shifter mech. |
