Not been lucky enough to have this problem on my XC90 but I did have it a few weeks ago on a Peugeot 206. The general reasons for this are:

Either the lander sensor either side of the cat has broken so the before and after values are not in alignment or maybe a problem with the cat itself.

In my Peugeots case it turned out that the cat had broken up inside the container and was moving around, every so often it would move forward and block the exhaust inlet. As a result the exhaust gasses would back up and cause the engine to stall. This isn't something on a Peugeot that can be tracked via a computer as it was very random and didn't log any faults. It took a long time to work out. In the end when we realised the issue we just removed the contents of the cat completely - not a great idea.

Every once in a while (once every 2 weeks) the emissions light comes on stating that the sensors are our of threshold limits - that's obvious as there is no cat. We have a feeling it will actually pass an MOT in it's current state but if it doesn't then we'll fit a new cat.

May I ask, are you still on the original transmission or has it been replaced/repaired at some point? If still original, you're doing damned well at 114k!!! Mine failed 16 mths ago at 72k and had it replaced now at 114k aswell.

Wouldnt mind I've been in Ballyconnell & Belfast since Sunday & had my DiCE unit in the car & my laptop with me!!!! Could have swung by & helped!
Thanks for the offer!

Had the codes read by these guys

Nothing of note came up, so they reset what was there, and suggested a bottle of fuel additive and a couple of tanks of super. So a tank of BPs finest, 60 miles of motorway at 80 mph, and I have to say she is running really well.

Regarding the gearbox, 2 or 3 months after I bought the car, she gave a transmission service urgent warning at 98k. Volvo suggested a new box, but the company I bought it from had it taken up to these guys

As far as I know, they just reset the code and replaced the fluid, and she's been fine ever since. She had 2 tranny software upgrades as part of her 108k service back in May, and she is driving fine. There's a thread on here somewhere about it I think.

Ok, so Fault In emissions system / engine management light back on. Boo.

Having codes read tomorrow. When I had the codes read previously, I recall there was an 'air leak' code stored, but can't remember what the exact code was.

Current symptoms are:

1) Sluggish to get going when cold, and
2) Newly, over the past 3 mornings, she hasn't gone to fast idle on cold start, i.e. she just sits at 650 rpm, rather than going up to ~1400 for a minute or two.

Done some research, looks like it could be a boost leak? I haven't the foggiest clue about turbo engines though, so will see what the garage says tomorrow.

In the meantime, any one any rough ideas, so I don't turn up tomorrow looking like a complete numpty?

Cheers!
Col

Ok, so stored code was P1200 I think, Intake Air Temperature Sensor fault.

New sensor ordered, ~£225, will have it fitted next week.
