Default Update:~ Front Pipe Hanging Bracket.

An update regarding the new exhaust front bracket: ~
The picture attached is the made up item- sod’s law meant that the single bolt that goes through the base of the above and into a captive nut just wouldn’t go- thread looks to be chewed up -probably why the original has been left off.
You can’t get a tap into the nut as space is very limited from the top and impossible from the underside as the two exhaust pipes are too close.
The solution has been to take a ¼” length of studding & extend the threads at one end (my stock of ¼ bolts had been too short) the stud/bolt will now pass through the bracket/captive nut & twin pipes into a flat bar suitable drilled that gives the support to the front pipe.

There's a thing gents...

I know why Volvo fitted such wobbly rubber engine/gearbox mounts in the first place. If one replaced them with modern stiffer mounts what is the effect? Presumably:

1 less flexing/general movement of the engine/gearbox so also the exhaust assembly
2 a bit more engine vibration throughout the car
3 a bit more engine noise in the cabin

Anyone able to comment - Classicswede?

It has been said in the forum that, the "soft" mounts allow the engine and transmission to slide under the occupants compartment in the event of a crash impact.

Volvo might regard that as safety.

P.S. I haven't crawled under the jam jar to inspect but I think the relevant mounting of my car's exhaust in the engine/bellhousing area might allow the exhaust to slide. I'm not convinced but that might be so.

Ah the Safety Sage!

Exactly! So do stiffer mounts allow the same in the event of a collision, meantime stress the exhaust a little less?

I also wondered whether one could use a combination of mounts - perhaps a softer one on the gearbox and stiffer ones left and right of the engine?

And mr Safety Sage, it's not just quoted on the forum, Volvo themselves explained the rationale behind the wobbly rubber engine mounts...
