Dashboard rattle
Hi,
Have recently developed a metallic rattle in the centre of the dashboard, I’ve removed the top vent, nothing obvious under there, tried looking from passenger footwell with glovebox removed, can’t find anything from there.... any ideas? I’m reasonably sure it is near the bulkhead, behind radio\ air vents but not sure if it is inside the cabin or outside.... very frustrating! Any suggestions on what to try next? Thanks in advance S. |

Nothing worse than a rattle you just can't find. Which car do you have? Volvosweden has some great videos on you tube on how to remove the vents and centre console on an XC70 which should be the same as a V70.
Might be worth giving it a look to see if it helps you locate the noise https://youtu.be/C7w75cR5-fE https://youtu.be/p2Y7JbShlTw Last edited by Rids666; Sep 3rd, 2018 at 21:03. |

After removing centre air vents, found the ducting had unclipped itself in the middle (hopefully you can see in attached photo)... this gave it enough movement to rattle against the hazard warning switch over certain bumps... hopefully that was it (test drive ok but there is a road on my commute where it goes nuts)... will confirm tomorrow. Ps thanks for vids above, made removal very straight forward. S. |

Grrrrr.... no, still there.... it’s left of centre of dash, had the glove box out, the airvents off, centre console out.... cannot find it.... I’m getting to the “f**k this I’m gonna sell it point”.....

Have you checked those vents right at the back of the desk that blow on the windscreen? Possibly it could be inside the door card also. I've also had to silence some noises inside the B pillars

Definitely not A or B post, how do you remove the windscreen vents? Had centre console, stereo, glovebox and air vents out at weekend, couldn’t find anything loose in the dash at all.... even removed the cover where the satnav would sit.... nothing! I’m beginning to think it might be passenger airbag? Nothing else really in there that could be loose. All air vent lines secure, all flaps secure....The airbag is bolted nice and tight, but could it be internal? Anyone ever removed passenger airbag? (Make me a bit nervous)... a pic of one removed would be useful to see if anything on the blind side of it could have worked loose.

Oh dear. The windscreen vents don't come out but mine were making a noise so I sprayed PTFE spray around the edges. That along with foam tape is how I attack rattles. I had a vibration noise from the wires inside the sterring wheel behind the airbag but certainly not metallic. Sorry I can't be of more help

Cheers....
I think it is hard plastic on metal (or possibly hard plastic on hard plastic).... I’m gonna have a look at scuttle tomorrow to see if the sound is transmitting through from that area.... all very frustrating! Even went for a drive with glovebox and air vents removed.... still there! It’s the only sound the car makes (that it shouldn’t) hence my obsessiveness... wife thinks I have OCD |
