Fuel Cap issues
Hi,
I joined a few months ago having purchased a 57 plate 2.4 D5 XC90. We appear to have our first fault with the fuel cap. The fuel cap refuses to open. We discovered the fault a few days ago when unlocking the car that the fuel cap would not unlock. No amount of combinations of door open, boot open, locking unlocking, trying the 2nd key will fix it. I understand the 10 minute delay where it keeps it unlocked for 10 minutes after you lock the car but we appear to have a fault. Fuel cap will simply not unlock. I have to open the boot and manually release it, once done, we can lock the car and then after 10 minutes the fuel cap will lock. This suggests to me that power, whatever is still working on the fuel cap because it does lock. Ive looked here and can't actually see a fuse for It thttp://www.volvohowto.com/volvo-xc90-fuses-list-and-amperage/ We could live with this but its just frustrating having to manually unlock it when we refuel. We could leave it unlocked if it didn't lock itself but it does and the door swings open if you drive with it unlocked anyway. Anyone seen such a situation before? We do not have a button inside the car to unlock it like you do on some Volvos. Many thanks in advance. Last edited by mkc; Jun 16th, 2018 at 09:28. |

Often the solenoid failes / seizes / stops working in one direction
Remove the lock solenoid from inside the car, disassemble, clean, lubricate, reassemble, refit Then you'll be fine

Thank you. This is the black and creamy coloured box right? I’ve seen some on eBay for £110 for Volvo parts so if we think it might be that then that’s fine . I’m not sure I’m confident enough to remove it and take it apart Thank you. I’ll see if there are any videos in you tube. Thanks for taking the time to reply

From inside the boot, remove the right side of the trim. Theres tab at the bottom of the trim that allows you to remove it.
With the fuel flap open, you'll see some screw heads. Unscrew them a little, and inside you will see a black and cream long boxey type thing, that the fuel lock. If you've loosened the screws, it will be a little loose now. Remove the screws and take it off, (after disconnecting the connector). Open it up, use some vaseline or high meting point grease, and lube up the corkscrew inside. Once refuted, it should work (after the 10min delay). If it doesn't, they can be had for approx £25-40 on eBay. |

Brilliant video. Very clear and professional. Then he drops the absolute bombshell that’s just made me spit coffee and chocolate hob nob all over my iPad. The only flaps he gets to put Vaseline on these days..... brilliant
