Default Faulty EGR Valve ?

Firstly apologies as I'm sure this item has been covered many times on the forum, but thought it worthwhile asking for advice.

Noticed a strange noise coming from the the engine compartment a couple of days ago & took the XC60 along to the local Volvo independant garage & following a visual examination this was narrowed down to the EGR valve, although no error messages on the dashboard & when plugged into the diagnostics, this didn't show up any problems either.
The noise tends to disappear after idling for a few minutes & only reoccurs when the throttle is pressed.
The garage is of the opinion that the cause of this noise is connected to the EGR valve butterfly & have advised that the EGR is replaced,at a cost exceeding £600 before further problems come about.

My questions are:
Will continuing to drive the motor cause any actual damage to the engine & secondly, is it necessary to also replace the 'cooler' with the EGR valve which I have seen mentioned when Google searching ?

I would get it diagnosed by a volvo workshop , could be cheaper in the long run ! There will be fault codes if the EGR valve is faulty , the egr valve and cooler are very robust on your engine ..

The problem was finally narrowed down to a faulty vacuum check/control valve. Apparently when this valve develops a fault it causes the EGR valve to become noisy.
So changed both the VCV & the EGR & it sorted the problem.... £634 later. Odd one tho as it was difficult to pin down with no error codes being present.

Was it the one way valve you had to het replaced on the vacuum pump? The one that costs about £70 for the smallest piece of plastic ever☹️

Yes I believe it was... but I had the EGR valve changed as well anyway to ensure it solved the noise problem.
