Default XC60 Not Starting.

Wonder if anyone here can help, as my dealer seems to have no answer.

In the last 6 weeks my car has refused to start, three times, with each resulting in car being towed to dealer.

Scenario is a s follows every time.

Drive car no problem. Stop car return five minutes later, it won't start. Engine turns but wont fire.

First trip to dealer they diagnosed as faulty fuel pressure sensor, replaced. then they said fan was running non stop (which it wasn't doing before ), so replace fan control module total cost £700.

Week later car does same again won't start, towed to dealer. Dealer says they can't replicate , car starts first time the following morning. But they replace fuel filter and keep the car of 5 days in QC (no charge to be fair).

Approx. 10 days later does the same again, towed to dealer, next morning when dealer goes to investigate starts first time, no fault codes.

Im thinking this must be an immobiliser issue, any thoughts or help please, as Volvo dealer says car is showing no fault codes, Etc.

Have you tried different keys?

I does sound like it could be an immobiliser issue. My wife's Clio showed similar behaviour. The car would turn over when the key was turned but refused to start. An AA chap identified, from past experience, that the car's immobiliser was not recognising the key ( which communicates with the immobiliser ), so the ignition then cuts out. He took the key some distance from the car, gave the key shake (don't ask me!) returned to the car and the car started fine.

I now today have a spare key (which I did not have previously), which was misplaced by my other half, so now at least I can try the spare key next time.

I did read on another forum that apparently the immobiliser resets after 5 hours (on a V70) so was curious if this was why when the dealer tries the car it starts.

I will try the 'shake' method next time ... LOL

I imagine that perhaps the battery was making poor contact in the key fob which shaking fixed. It's like taking the cover off the tv remote and shuffling the batteries which often revives the remote.

Rooster - I did think possibility of faulty fuel sender, however fuel gauge seems to be working would that still work, if the wiring was burnt out?

Had a similar problem with my A3 2.0 diesel after putting a few gallons of unleaded in.

It would start from cold but struggled to start after a drive, I.e. Petrol mixed with diesel.

I ran it until I had used quarter of tank and the topped up. Now starts no problem.

Definitely not a fuel issue Im sure, unless my garage sold my contaminated fuel

Just spoke with Volvo and they say that they have a fault code with boost pressure sensor , and that in theory this would not cause the car to fail to start.

That part would be another £210 + fitting apparently with NO guarantee that this would fix the issue. Given I have already spent £700 Im not keen on this.

Anybody got some advice ?

Default Update

So today after further 3 days at dealer, go to collect car from dealership who confirm the car starting first time all the time.

Car gets delivered from workshop to showroom ready to collect, and I jump in and 'tad da' it fails to start ( that will be the forth breakdown in a month).

To be fair the service manager immediately got their top tech on it. He arrived with a PC to plug in, so hopefully will hear soon as to what the issue is causing the problem.

My suggestion is could it be a problem with glow plugs. I had a 1.8 diesel escort and before it would start the glow plugs had to warm up and then the engine turned over to start. With the modern diesels it doesnt seem to need this warming up of the glow plugs but I would assume that there must be some type of system to warm the plugs. I replaced the glow plugs and all was well.
