I had a Peugeot 407 that when it regenerated it powered up the heated door mirrors and so could attach an LED to illuminate when it was regenerating

Is anything else activated on a Volvo when it regenerates that you know of?

Good article.

My EU6 D4 2.4 AWD has gone straight to “engine system service required” message. I wonder why it didn’t come up with the other message First.

Anyway, it’s booked in for Thursday, so fingers crossed .......

I wasn’t sure from the post whether the only way to read the soot weight in the DPF was by using VIDA - or whether this can be done with a Bluetooth gizmo and the OBD2 Car scanner app on my iPhone.

Could somebody clarify please.

Thanks - Rob

Yes, apart from VIDA, you can see DPF soot weight in gram with "Car Scanner ELM OBD2" app in Volvos from 2011 (not sure with older cars though). Full version (Android, iPhone) is free for trial in first 3-4 days, so you can check which parameters are shown in your car. It is probably the only such phone app.

DPF regeneration with Car Scanner ELM OBD2:

Not sure with Torque Pro, it seems to show DPF regen only indirectly, through rising temperature of catalyst converter, distance from last regen, etc, but not the exact soot weight (I don't use it, just seen on several youtube videos).

No option for cat temp reading with my Elm327 Bluetooth obd2 reader and Torque Pro. I have to go on the EGR position, which remains at a constant 94.9% during regeneration. This is on a Euro4 V70 D5 (185bhp.) These early post injection DPF fitted systems can end up burning oil, which results in an 8ncreased regeneration frequency. The increased oil temperatures during regen make the engine burn more oil, resulting in more ash deposits and even more regenerations and so on. I plan to carry out a forced regen later today and then try a 5W-40 C3 Castrol Edge oil to see if it improves matters. I would imagine it's going to be rather lumpy during warm up, but I'll live with that if the oil consumption drops. On Euro4 D5 cars with the M66 manual box, there is an EGR Cooler Bypass Valve fitted. This is controlled by a vaccum operated actuator. If the diaphragm in this is shot, the Vac Pump goes flat out in an attempt to draw down a Vaccum. The pump vents via it's drive that slots into the exhaust Camshaft. At higher revs, there us quite a significant amount of air being vented into the too of the engine, which can result in increased crank case pressure. Through testing, I've discovered this pressure increase to be high enough to overwhelm the oil separator causing oil to be burned. Like I said above, this can set of a chain of events that quickly cloggs the DPF with oil ash.

Having only owned the car for 10 weeks or so I'm not used to DPF regens and cycles. In 2000 miles I've only noticed one motorway regen which lasted around 20-30 minutes and no other regens at all. Only sign was the drop in instant MPG, no boomy noise. But the past week/10 days I've had a lot lower average MPG on my commute (too short really for a diesel at 7 miles and never more than 50mph), this morning, when I arrived at work I had a rev and did notice a boomy noise, not so when I got home tonight and the average mpg was higher, but not as high as I have seen in the past.

Thinking of taking the car for a 20-30 minute dual carriageway run on monday, just to see if it helps to clear the soot. Would like to get to know my car and when I need to take it for a longer drive to help clear it, or if I should just continue as normal and hope for the best.

I do wish there was a symbol or better yet a message on the dash to inform a regen is taking place!
A 2014 won't be a euro 4, most likely a euro 5 but could just be a euro 6.

I have tried to work out why the mirrors heat up, but I give up....

I have a Corsa diesel and have had no sign of regen in the few months I have owned it, so I am looking for a tell tale sign...

Thank you it was a great article, and because you took the time to include the explanation of the “components “ ie, dpf, ems, etc. I was able to understand what and where you where talking about, unlike many posts that assume you are a fully qualified petrol head. Which I’m not.
Although quite a hunk of this was way over my head( I still think in terms of carbareters ). I got the jist. So for me it needs a bottom line which I take as follows;
If I stick to a steady 68/70mph on the motorway with no sharp braking and acceleration, for approx 30mins, the car will do what it is designed to do all by itself without my intervention?
