Default Soot filter full !

My S80 has tonight displayed soot filter full- see manual along with engine service required
Obviously the car’s an oil burner
I’ve had the car awhile and unfortunately do mostly short local runs so not ideal for the cars inherent health as I’m led to believe
However this is the first time I’ve had this particular message on the dash
The cars lacking some power too but I’d say not in limp mode however
I’ve got a trip to Cardiff planned tomorrow so therefore have the ideal opportunity to do a ’regen’
What is the process for this scenario guys ?
Also is it of any benefit to fill up with premium fuel for the trip and planned ‘regen’ ?
Would there likewise be something to be gained by adding a bottle of redex to the tank too ?
Finally How do I know when the regeneration process is complete ?
Regards
Chris

As far as I know, the car will regen when the conditions are right for it. You don't do anything and won't really know when it's completed. Hopefully the light should go out. I think if you put the instantaneous MPG readout on, you see a drop when the regen is in progress.
PS - I drive an E3 without all that gubbins, so that is what I've read on the forum previously, not experience.
Car shouldn't need expensive fuel/additives.

If the message only came on last night and the car is not in limp mode, the journey to Cardiff could well sort it.

Personally I would get it onto the motorway and do the journey non stop so that the regen does not get interrupted midway through it's cycle.

Good luck and hope it sorts itself for you.

The warning message should sort itself if the soot filter has been cleared after the drive.

Update- completed my trip to Cardiff and no change
Still got the soot filter message and engine service on the dash display
Am I now looking at a forced regeneration session at the dealer or a new dpf?
Regards

Get a fellow forum member with VIDA to diagnose and then see what you need to do

As soon as the service message appeared it would not regenerate.

What should happen is you get the soot filter full message first. Then if ignored the service message appears. You get a short window to get the car on a motorway or at a speed of 50mph and above for 20 mins or so.

Vida will be the only way to sort it now. Don’t continue to drive it as you will just fill the filter up to a point it can’t be regenerated and a new one will be required at great cost.

As you do mostly local runs it probably just needs a forced regent but The car must be checked to ensure the whole system is working to allow it to regen. A faulty pressure sensor for example would give these messages.

The above avice is sound . The thing that seems odd is that you did not seem to have any warning. Both messages appeared suddenly and this bit is not normal. It would lead me to suggest that there is something awry in the regen system like a sensor. The only other thing i would add is that after the forced regen is dome the fault code should me cleared manually by the dealer and the regen tripmeter should be zeroed. ( dont know where the tripmeter lives but i read it on another post on the forum.)

VIDA can tell the car that a new DPF filter has been fitted, or a Regen has occurred which means the DPF is empty - same as a new filter.

The car calculates how much soot the engine generates and also what the Pre and post filter pressures are. This helps the ECU determine how full the filter is likely to be and when a Regen should occur.

You should read the calculated soot values and what the pressures are, and compare to normal values. That will help you to determine what is good and what is not good with the emissions systems.
