D5 is a Euro 4 engine with 185bhp
2.4D is a Euro 4 Engine detuned to 163 bhp and not to be confused with the Excellent earlier D5 Euro which had 163bhp.

Not to overlook the top of the range D5 twin turbo with 215 bhp which is an awesome engine.

I thought they'd stopped making the 2.4D when the twin turbo version came out circa 2011? Could be wrong...
Anyway to the OP - I believe they are structurally the same with most differences being software. Given the cost of production will be the same, you've got to think it's just an exercise in badge engineering and/or it meets certain emissions thresholds for tax in certain markets.

Would you like to tell us what year car we are looking at here?
As you can see there are many variables but a Model Year would tie it down specifically.

I have a 2007 2.4 D S80 (Still a D5 engine, but it has 163bhp) & my Dad has a 57 plate V70 (185 bhp). Both cars have D5 engines, just mine has less bhp. The only difference from an exterior point of view is my Dad's car has a 'D5' badge on the boot, but mine doesn't (Normally, the 163bhp version would have a '2.4 D' badge on the back, but I presume someone removed it). Just be careful that someone hasn't stuck a D5 badge on the back of a 2.4 D (Check the log book & refer to the bhp figures to make sure you're buying the model you want). Looking at the engines of both vehicles, they look & are identical. Its purely tuning that differentiates the bhp figures, so the 163bhp version isn't a different engine, its just a detuned version of the 185bhp that happens to have the same engine too).
Fuel consumption wise around town, both cars are similar to be honest. Mine does more mpg on the motorway though. Admittedly, the 185bhp version does have a bit more grunt. The 163bhp version is by no means slow though, so it depends what you want I guess. The road tax is exactly the same price for both cars too.
