Valve adjustment on diesel
I understand that the valves should be adjusted regularly on the diesel engine. How do I do this? Do I need special tools, what are the procedures?

RE: Valve adjustment on diesel
I cannot remember the mileage intervals for adjusting the valve clearances but here is a guide to how to adjust them...
Remove the rocker cover and turn the engine over using a 27mm socket until No1 cyl (front)is at TDC injection. Both cam lobes on No1 cyl should be pointing diagonally upwards. Check the clearances of No1 cylinder. Check the clearances of all remaining cylinders in firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4. To adjust any clearances you must turn the engine a further quarter of a revolution from TDC to prevent the valves hitting the pistons. Checking clearance is 0.15mm-0.25mm inlet, 0.35mm-0.45mm exhaust. Setting clearance is 0.20mm inlet, 0.40mm exhaust. These clearances are for a cold engine. Special tools are needed to depress the tappets and remove the adjusting shims. |

RE: Valve adjustment on diesel
Should be done every 20,000 miles but dealers usually leave them alone if they are quiet enough. All the best, Peter |
