Default 940 Autobox problem

My 1994 940 Auto estate (2.0 litre) developed an gearbox problem the other day - hardly any drive when cold, improving as engine/fluids warmed up. Next day same again when cold and little drive even when warm if pulling away on an incline.

Dealer thought could be clogged oil lift filter - car has done 141000 miles - and replaced same. Better overall but, if left in Drive, pulls away in third gear. However, pulls away in one and two fine if held manually. Fourth to third kickdown is OK, overdrive cut-out OK.

Should I just drive around the problem - ie: use one and two manually - or could this be the start of something more serious?

Thanks for any shared wisdom! Graham

Scotland???

Is this a second name or where you are located??
There is a reason to the question, I live in Scotland and use only one Gearbox specialist who's been here over 50 years. the company is family owned and is constantly updating it's procedures as well as handing it down through the family.

I would suggest that the box requires an immediate service, it sounds as though it's having difficulty building up pressure in order to change gear. This can be caused by a clogged filter, Dirty fluid, or weak torque convertor.

It is adviseable to get the box checked ASAP by an auto box specialist and have the fluid & filter changed as long running in this condition could result in serious damage.

A service should cost around the £100 mark for fluid and filter + any adjustments to the clutch pack.

Let me know how you get on, as I may be able to help if you ARE located in Scotland.

Hello Dave M.

Yes. I do live in Scotland - although up in the north west. I wondered about the torque converter myself as it would seem to explain why it changes OK manually.

Be grateful for details of local - ie: Scottish - specialists. By local, I mean a radius of about 200 miles - which passes for local up here. But then, you'd know that!

Cheers
