I certainly will. I considered the E-bay unit but to be honest I rarely touch the lights switch. They are just one permantly as far as I am concerned.

Am I being thick. Does twisting the lights "on" make the dipped beam any different to the "on" that they always are?

No theres no difference in dipped main beam. The main difference is full main beam cannot be permanently on if lights switch is at 0. You can only flash.

Not sure if fogs will activate either maybe someone else knows or we could just pop onto our drives and check I guess lol.

I think that it depends on whether your insurance company think that your changed lightsd in some way contributed to the accident & whether they are looking for a reason not to pay.

Hi Chris, taking aside these are drl's Ive never heard of anyone who has fitted extra lighting to their car being deemed responsible for causing an accident.

I agree led drl's can be very bright and if used at night would be blinding hence the reason for the auto off we have been discussing.

Having been in a near fatal accident, and due to the quantity of driving I do and the lazy poor quality of driving i see daily I axtually take being seen very seriously (its not just the bling factor). I would rather be seen and possibly be insulted for having the led's than not be seen if you know what I mean.

People having been bolting extra lights to the front of there cars for as long as i can remember (escort mark1 for example).

I will though to put this point into fact contact my insurance and ask. I get your point though, and would personnaly never do a modification that would dedm my insurance void nor should anyone else.

On this subject of insurance, I also just had fitted non volvo running boards, as these bolt through the existing jacking points could these also be deemed to void my insurance or anybody elses.

I think though this is a seperate topic regarding mods and insurance.

Regards Bill

I am absolutely no expert in this & my opinion should be totally ignored but I don't think that the question is necessarily about the EXTRA lights but more about the DISABLED original lights that Volvo think should be on & the insurance company assessed the risk assuming that they were on.

My guess (totally a guess) is that as long as your new lights are legal & that you don't disable the originals there should not be a problem.

Do your new lights meet the height, emark & other requirements? This is where I could see it getting trickier.

All very daft I know but I pay my insurance premiums so that they will pay out if necessary not so that they can find an excuse - however daft - not to pay.

I really regret that we find it necessary to be having this conversation at all!

PS I think the LED running light look just fine & just wish that Volvo fitted them.

Ok, having trauled the web have found the department of transports official document on oem drls and retrofit drls.

http://www2.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/veh...ninglights.pdf

This means following the supplied instructions for position on your car you are freely entitled to fit and use them. Obviously following the directives of the dot.

So with my particular units I will be fitting an auto on/off which i have given in a previous post were to find on the web.

I personnaly do not feel it a requirement to contact my insurer for either the switching off of my standard drls nor the addition of my new led drls. I can understand that some people air on the side of caution but if you follow the governments rules then there can be no come back at all.

We should maybe consider a seperate post on the legals, supplying all the relevant documents available, like the link above.
But it would be foolish to right a blanket manuscript regarding insurance as I am almost sure that the answers given by an insurance telephone operator would vary from an insurance evaluator if you catch my drift.

I hope this in some way helps anybody interested in fitting leds.

Cheers

Bill

On a question of legality, I think (IMHO) you'll find that this :

Quote:
Then splice the cables {for the DRL's} onto the original parking lights, remove the old normal bulb.
.. would be a no-no, as you are disabling lights that are legally required to be fitted and maintained in good working order.

Replacing the original "parking lights" ( correct terminology being Position lights ) with DRL's probably means
there are NO Position lights on the car, leaving you open to a Fine, and the already mentioned Insurance issues.

However, if the DRL's are added to the car, then there would be no such issues,
providing the DRL's themselves comply with Regulations.
