Default wishful thinking?

Hi

My s40 1.8 petrol 128,000 miles won't start,
It took me about 10 minutes starting it yesterday, the engine had power and was trying to start up and eventually I got it going but with very little power.

I took it down the street and back at about 5 mph...got it back on my drive, turned the engine off and back on and it started up fine with full power.
Didn't really want to drive it but had to go to my mum's, when I set off back it took a few goes starting up, and then lost power at the end of the street.

It's now left on my mum's street and doesn't sound like starting, just a whirring noise.
I did think that the fuel filter was clogged up, when I first bought it kept losing some power in 4th and 5th, two garages couldn't find anything wrong with it.

It's probably a long shot but does it sound like there's any point getting it towed to a garage to have a look at?
I've managed to get an old golf cheap from my stepdad's friend which was actually really good timing but I miss my volvo already.

thanks
matt

Getting a new fuel filter stuck on can't hurt in my opinion, as it's a service item that's often overlooked as you have to get under the car to change it, not hard to change though, well worth a shot I'd say.

Also (I've left it too long to be able to edit my post) there is also a possibility that you might have a build up of crud in the tank, as my t4 was suffering from that, and I was getting the same symptoms you describe, it must be because when you turn the car off the majority of the crap falls away from it so it then partially unblocks itself, until you drive again for a bit and the suction pulls all the bits back against the gauze until it blocks again, this was what the in tank gauze looked like when I removed the sender unit.

Worth checking your fuel pressure also. The pressure regulator or fuel pump may have intermittent issues.

Yes, my bet will be a failing fuel pump too.
