Default Timing belt tensioner

My timing belt tensioner body is slightly damp with oil yet the top and bottom 1/2 inch is dry. With engine running it is dead still.

At first I thought it was leaking but I am know thinking that it is just a bit of oil mist that has wafted in the casing and onto the body of the tensioner. Anyone else noticed this?

If your tensioner is the hydraulic piston type, the tensioner on my '97 V40 was exactly the same. Was still good after 370.,000mls.

Thanks for your reply.

I was only looking yesterday, not changing the cam belt for a week so I have not had it in my hand yet but I think it is spring and hydraulic. I am just assuming that.

yes the 850 ( And 240 and 7/940 ) has a superb quality tensioner with an expensive sealed needle bearing to swivel on and it never had a schedule for change , It is a pity they never carried it over to later models then there would never be engine failures due to Aux belt/tensioner problems ! I would like to know the name of the man who dropped this tensioner in the late 90's !

You often find manufacturers change things that are proven bullet proof. Let me know if you find him.
