Where's the green light you're referring to? Is it on the instrument cluster?
Mine is a small warning indicator on the switch itself.

Cheers. I'll have a look! I haven't noticed it before, being honest.

I would have thought the side lights (switch to position 1/180°) would have automatically turned off when you removed the key from the ignition, or you'd hear some kind of warning beep when you opened the door prompting you to turn them off if the ignition didn't do it. Other cars I've owned beeped at me when I opened the door, but Volvo doesn't.

Its quite easy to forget & leave the side lights on in the Volvo for this reason. Getting used to it now though, but it took a while admittedly!

Apart from an early 740 Volvo that had a screwdriver slot close to the headlight switch that allowed you to turn off the daylight running lights they all seem to be reliant on software to deselect the feature. Always got my garage to turn it off the DRL'S leaving the choice up to me.

So I was out in my car tonight for a spin & I found the green light indicating the side lights are on (Above the light switch, as mentioned above).

I think the reason I didn't see the green light is because the wiper stalk covers it due to my seating position (fully back as far as it'll go, as I'm tall). I'm not the slimmest chap either, so even though the seat is back as far as it goes, I'm actually sat quite far forward.

why do you turn the parking lights on anyway? leaving them on the headlamp position ( far right) and they look after themselves ... They all go out when you turn ignition off.

I use them when it isn't quite dark enough to put the headlights on, but I still want to be visible to other road users. The lights aren't on all day in my car like in other Volvo's - The previous owner must have got somewhere to disable this function. My Dad's V70 on the other hand has lights on all the time (even when you select the switch to the off position, they stay on)... That's a normal function I know. In my car though, position switch to off means all the lights are off (I can turn them on manually if I want).

I'm aware that putting the headlight position switch to the far right turns all the lights off when the ignition is off, but it doesn't do this when you're using sidelights (middle position). I've made it a habit to turn the side lights off manually, although I would have thought there would have been an audible warning like on pretty much every other vehicle I've owned that indicates your lights are left on when you open the door. An easy mistake could leave you with a flat battery.

Its not wise to drive on side lights alone and illegal in certain poor conditions , why not just let the car work as volvo intended and have an easier life 👍

I only drive using side lights when its not dark enough to use headlights. If conditions or visibility are poor, then of course I use the headlights.

The previous owner turned the daytime running lights off, not me (The lights aren't on at any time, unless I select them myself manually).

Why do you worry about manually matching the use of your headlights to the degree of darkness?

One of the reasons to have dipped lights on is to increase the chances of being seen in marginal visibility conditions which do not require the lights for you to illuminate the road ahead but in which the reaction time by other drivers to seeing that a vehicle is approaching might be reduced. The cost of having the dipped lights on is marginal while the risk reduction might be all important as you cannot rely upon the ability of other drivers to see you quickly enough to avoid their own incompetences. As Clan says, let the car drive the way Volvo intended it to. Volvo do have a reputation for safety and the lighting system is part of that regime.
