It is nothing whatsoever to do with volvo UK at any stage ..,
At this stage it's nothing to do with the dealer either unless something is found to prove it is ..

There's a good old saying:
Don't keep a dog and bark yourself You pay insurance money for an event like this. You hand all the facts as you know them to the insurers and let them do their job, and deliver to you the results. And in the meantime you get on with life.

Would agree with above. If the car is completely burnt out then at least you will be insured. Believe it or not, if the fire is small (ie put out quickly before fully burnt out) the insurance company won’t pay out. This happened to a customer of mine. She took her V50 to a local Volvo Specialist who did a full service, and 1/2 hour later the car caught fire inside from the CEM - someone managed to disconnect the battery and quickly put out the fire, but the damage was severe, smoke issues, all wiring burnt out etc. The car was recovered to us, but the insurance company said it was not insured because it was just a wiring fire and this wasn’t covered!! It was totally beyond economical repair, but the insurance company wanted nothing to do with.......neither did the Volvo Specialist, but that’s another story.

Thanks - I very much appreciate all these helpful pointers. Will get in touch with insurers again in the morning to see where they are with assessing cause and go from there.
Am pretty sure insurance will cover the written off car and offer us a cheque to replace it. The main issue is that they aren't interested in recovering the £1000 dealership bill for the work we had done. Despite the fact that it was less than an hour before the fire, in their eyes, it is just money we have paid for maintenance. Could have been one hour or one month previous - they still won't recover it for us. |

Just because the outcome was favourable under the circumstances doesn’t change liability or investigation path. Volvo UK may want to look at the car to ascertain the cause. Vauxhall and BMW have in the past 3 years recalled cars - some 8 to 10 years old - due to fires. They should at least be given the opportunity.

Would you claim the maintenance work if it was 6 years ago? 6 months ago? 6 days ago? 6 minutes ago? It was vehicle maintenance work that had to be paid for when the work was completed. That's all. If the car was subsequently crashed / stolen / burnt out after the maintenance work, then that is a separate event, which is insured in accordance to your policy.

The insurance will pay out the market value of an equivalent car. Arguably had the servicing/repairs not been completed before the write off, it could have been worth less if it had faults/servicing requirements.

I completely accept the work had to be done, and whilst I don't like it, I understand why it is not included in any insurance claim.
However, if the fire can be attributed to work carried out by the dealership or their negligence in not noticing a serious fault, I would very much like to be able to pursue the dealership for reimbursement of the bill and any other associated costs. Found out today that insurers won't necessarily carry out a forensic investigation as to the cause. They might - but it's not guaranteed. Depends if their recovery department thinks it is worth it. I have sent then a copy of the invoice showing the work done which included two new fuel lines - hopefully that will persuade them to try and find the cause. Thanks again for advice |

If you get a payout on the car there's nothing to stop you going for a small claims court case to recover your losses, i.e. The bill for the engine work.
