Mine has gone there too. I scraped it off, wire brush and waxoyl. Seems fine now. I do have a welder, so not too worried.

As promised, here are a couple of pictures of the same area after treatment with Hydrate 80 and a couple of coats of Electrox. The next job at the end of the week is a top coat and then probably some Dynax S50. Not the prettiest of jobs but the only people likely to see it are me and the MoT inspector.

For comparison, I've included a picture of the other side of the car which is representative of the state of the rest of the vehicle.

Good job... bet your glad you didn't go down the extreme route as suggested by someone now.
These cars are built well.Lets hope it lives on for many years.

Hopefully it should last a bit longer. I can think of pleasanter ways of spending time than lying on my back in the driveway covered in rust but at least it's done.

Any sane person would probably have scrapped it a couple of years ago when the cambelt failed. but I'd always had a soft spot for it and it's probably my favourite of the Volvos I've owned over the last 35 years. So I'm intending to tidy it up a bit and sort out a few other non-urgent bits and pieces. Ph1 V70s are now getting to be quite rare around here and it usually seems to generate some interest whenever I take the car out. I've certainly no intention of parting with it.

It's been interesting to contrast it with what I remember of my first Volvo, a 17 year old 122S from 1967, which was in a far worse state rustwise although probably better than most other 17 year old cars of that era. By comparison, the V70 looks practically new after 21 years!

Great job!
I'm planning to visit the rust busters tomorrow before any more happens on mine.
Incidentally there is a V70 mark 1 around these parts. I drove past it today - the bottom edge of the passengers door has rust along it. Ironically the car is owned by someone who works in a body shop and the car is always clean whenever I see it.
Shame to see but does suggest these cars have rust issues...

There are many many of these cars still perfect , It is most likely badly repaired accident damage , it is unbelievable how many cars pass through body shops , and over a period of 25 years it is possible a car has gone through a body shop several times .

This is certainly the case with my rear OS door. Somewhere in the first seven years of its life the car had a significant repair to this area.
However the dog leg on the NS had rust which has simply developed overtime - I've seen rust in this area on other '70's for sale on eBay so it appears this area is a 'weak spot' on these models.
