LSD Options
Hi all,
I haven’t been on for ages, long and short it’s the usual, two house moves, two young children and working a lot. But hey ho! I know this subject has been broached a few times of the years but I wanted an up to date answer if I can get one. I’ve stripped my Volvo after it became a bit unusable, the engine and drivetrain is going into a space frame mini. The frame is together, I’m looking at getting the thing together and the missing part of the puzzle seems to be an LSD. I’ve seen on TBricks Dana 30 mentioned, happy to buy from the states, just wanted a bit of direction on the subject if possible. £400-£500 budget, if I need a different rear end so be it. Ultimately I want to weigh up my options. Thanks Chris |

https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=303379 A 940 back axle with a G80 "Locker" diff, essentially a Tor-Sen diff rather than the multi-plate clutch type LSD but does the same job. Also consider the fact Jeep XJ Cherokees used the Dana 1041 LSD which surprise, surprise is the same as what Volvo used. Later XJ Cherokees also used the locker type in the front axle but they were few and far between, the previous diff in the front was a Dana 1031 so you're more likely to find a rear LSD one.

Thanks Dave, really appreciate that.
I don’t think I have one, but this makes me think I should check mine before making a purchase! Job for the weekend. Any other options? |

Have a look at this https://th-pettersson.se/sv/artiklar...oms/index.html
It's a "Detroit Truetrac" made by Eaton, but without the Eaton markings...

G80 is a locker/locking diff, whereas the Truetrac is a Torsen/helical diff. I've also seen clutch style diff's available for the 940 on fleabay. The "Detroit Locker" would be more akin to the G80.
The G80 is an investment, they don't come up for sale that often!

i bought a GRIPPER LSD for my 940, it's great but best part of a grand. You can buy them direct and make sure you specify you want a working speedo, Sellholm of Sweden offer a slightly more expensive option. GRIPPER were fantastic to deal with, customer service as you would want it, no messin' around....

The G80 is not a LSD but a diff that can lock at low speed.
Depending on use as to what diff is best between a plate type LSD and a Torsen LSD. For a plate type LSD gripper diffs are very good https://www.classicswede.co.uk/Gripp..._18214340.aspx for rally use they are the diff to use. For tarmac use a Torsen diff is good and does not need to be rebuilt with use like a clutch diff does. Quiafe have the ATB diff https://www.classicswede.co.uk/Quaif..._20193202.aspx or you can look at Taiwan for the truetrack that is popular in the states |
