The oil cooler is bolted to the rear of the sump but they normally don't give trouble.
Are you sure it's engine or rather than gearbox oil - there is a gearbox oil heat exchanger within the radiator and that's more likely to be your culprit.

If the latter is the case, what could that.mean for the transmission? I always thought the cooling system had high pressure when hot..

If 'Tannaton' is right and it is a similar system to the 7 series automatic cars, 'Fika', you need to act quickly. I had the same problem with my 745 when the oil cooler failed internally and allowed cross contamination of the fluids. It meant a new rad along with several flushes of the cooling system and transmission. I was lucky; I caught mine early and there was no lasting damage - let's hope yours is the same.
Regards, John.

It has and it is higher pressure than the oil return to the gearbox which goes through the cooler .. I have come across a couple of engine oil cooler leaks over the years is the oil in the coolant black or browny red?

Oil in coolant
Browny red
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/attac...1&d=1606160804 If it's the transmission oil - the gearbox is fooked anyway. Last edited by Bits; Nov 23rd, 2020 at 19:53. |

If it is browny-red, it is most likely to be ATF, which starts life bright red, 'Bits'. J.
