I don't know why, but people very often become excited about motor oil on motoring forums (I don't think we say fora any more, do we?). You may know I'm more of a biker than a car bloke, and until recently I owned a K6 Suzuki SV650S with 137,000 miles (that sort of mileage is very high for a bike - rare like a car getting to 300,000 miles) and subscribed to a SV650 online forum. The longevity of the bike was just down to good maintenance, and in particular the oil change regime: It had been swapped for cheap car 10W40 every 3,000 miles of its life (and had every receipt to prove it). Most of the bikers on the site just refused to believe me and insisted that only the very expensive (£15-£25/litre) 0W50 specialist motorcycle oils they were buying could possibly be good enough for a high revving (11,000RPM I think) 8 valve water cooled V-twin sports bike: ... opinions were entrenched and even abusive - that I could not possible put car oil (even though it was the correct grade and quality) into a sports motorcycle, although people were unable to explain why my bike had survived (well) for 137,000 miles whereas many others had only covered a quarter of that in the same time. Opinions became so vociferous that I deleted my online account and never went back. I'm pleased that Volvo owners on this forum do not feel quite as strongly as that about their motor oil (or filters, or little copper washers...). :-) Alan Last edited by Othen; Nov 14th, 2020 at 06:35. I have watched some very interesting videos on YouTube on the subject of oils and multi grade oils and the science behind it all and what it all means.
Makes a lot more sense now. Thanks for all the replies and advice, it’s been a very interesting thread. I think as a starting point i need to find a hand book with the specs in for my 1992 b230f model |

Edit Why bovver to dispute what long standing mainly moved on members explained about the anti drain valve filters, unless you can be bovvered to search back and find their reasons. I have noticed you tend to disregard forum history, makes you liable to repeat mistakes of the past ... init. /Edit Gosh are you still worried about washers or is it OCD? Clifford has a simple good way that works which I will follow in future. David I think handed down a tablet of stone answer. You prefer a mid way answer which sounds so kewl man. If you don't want the used once only washers F.O.C. I have two suggestions for you. You could experiment without a washer, what purpose does it serve anyway I don't know. Or. We could crowd fund a supply of whatever washers you earnestly desire. Howzat !!!! Stay kewl man .... Comrade Stephen Edwin . Last edited by Stephen Edwin; Nov 14th, 2020 at 12:35. |

P.S. Volvo? They are an authority re Volvo. Which Volvo tablet of stone specifies semi synthetic as opposed to mineral or full synthetic, please? I do try to obtain good information and get things right. . Last edited by Stephen Edwin; Nov 14th, 2020 at 13:37. |

Thank you for that helpful post.
See my earlier post! There are some words that permit [semi] synthetic if they meet certain standards. You appear to interpret those words as specification, designed for, mandatory. Experience validates that the words are permissive ... how many 240 owners have used I wonder an oil you say is wrong, without problems. Rather likd Royal Czar's experience with motor cycle oils. There will be more threads in which specific oil natures &c. get stated by various members. Happiness. . Last edited by Stephen Edwin; Nov 14th, 2020 at 14:04. |
