Default XC70 to XC90

Hi all,
Has anyone went from a 3rd gen XC70 D5 Auto to a 08'09 XC70. I realise I might be going backwards to an extent technology wise.

I know of all the main problems with them, gearbox etc, just wondering what the general consensus is.

The engine and gearbox are the same at that age.

Whilst you're going back to a P2 car, with less tech on the dashboard etc. you're also going to a platform with little to no Ford bits in it and that's a very good thing....

Thanks for the reply.
It's kind of my reasoning a little too. I had a lovely 2005 2.0T V70 in Navy with cream leather. 400,000km on the clock and running like clockwork but. I just wanted to come up a few years to something a little newer and liked the XC70 P3. But even though it's a nice car I still think that Ford scrimped on little things that are very sub par for a volvo badge. Door handles being one. They feel flimsy and just not smooth operating, it's like opening a mondeo door 🤦🏻*♂️😅.
There are plenty of the XC90s for sale over here with decent mileage on them and like all volvos proper volvos the interior ages well on them.

The P3 XC70 isn't a bad car - I've had one - but for me the Mk 1 XC90 was Volvo at its very best. There are some people that think the interior quality on the P3 XC70 was better than the XC90 but I think that's as much about the sheer acreage inside it. It's screwed together in ways that car manufacturers just can't afford to now.

I've got an XC60 now which is essentially a P3 XC70 on stilts - the only reason I've got it is a really like the Sensus system and a DAB radio which you couldn't get on the old XC90.. oh and the double blow D5....

Very true. I do like the XC70 and it's like everything I suppose, when I had the P2 V70 and was parked alongside a P3 XC70 one day I couldn't believe the size diffence and thought to myself, one day I'd like one of those, now that I have one even though I like it there's something appealing to me about the XC90's. I've always liked jeeps, and I've driven the XC90 and one thing I do remember well about it is there was a nice driving position in it. It drove more like a car than an SUV.

I'm not so sure about that. As Tannaton said, the XC90 is a really good car productionwise. I'm quite sure, the safety standards are very evolved, even in a car that was designed at the end of the 1990s. Compared to the new XC90 MKII the difference is not very far.

All other technical components are solid in their self, and nowadays there are some possibilities, that allow all the modern gimmicks to be refitted.

What is it, that you are missing? If you break it down, you get an analog driver information system vs. a digital one. The nav is out of date. But there is not a lot more, I'd say.

You could get a CFE+ for some essentials like tip turn signal or auto fold mirrors. The open/close window or on/off for the parking heater is included as well. And if you want that more modern feeling with a touch screen, combined with AndroidAuto (=GoogleMaps navigation, music streaming and so on) there is a guy on FB that sells a beautiful head unit with touch screen and specially designed for the XC90 console for around $700. Or you do something yourself with a RaspberryPI 4, a RPi touchscreen and OpenAuto (I think that's the name, I can look it up, if you want to). That would be around 350 to 400 with a little self involvment (no soldering, just putting things together). With both you get a modern entertainment system with all modern technologies. And the premium sound system is still great.

Nope, I'm not so sure, this is really a step back. Maybe there is a step more needed to get to an actual configuration.

Keep in mind, these cars are the first generation cars, that are "computerized". The old system in the 850/V70 up to 1999 is a different story, that was a big step to the P2s, but since then, there aren't any real differences in the logic behind all these control modules. The processing power is better now, sure, but the principals used, are nearly the same between P2 and P3 or even the newest XCs.

I'd try to get a XC90 as young as possible in your budget, if it is one of the latest models, you could look for cooling seats, that's something you won't even get in a lot of new cars.

I went from a V70 SE 2010 to a XC90 2014 recently due to needing 7 seats occasionaly.

The first thing I noticed was how noisy the engine was when accelerating, maybe the levels of sound insulation are less. Then i noticed things like how the seats are not as comfy in the XC90 as the V70 and how the instrument cluster, buttons and switches appear cheaper.

I'm assuming it could be down to trim levels but the P3 was a much nicer car to drive and be in or it could be that by 2014 the ford influence was directing cheaper components or a bit of both.

Having said that i love the space and height of the XC90 and won't be swapping it until 2030 at the earliest !

Ford sold Volvo to Geely in 2010
