On my xc60 my17,16 plate the phone symbol indicates that my phone is connected.
why would you need it to show speed in a small window when you have a very big speedometer in front of you?

In my case, my children requested to have speed displayed on info screen - since one seating behind the driver can't see instrument panel.
My previous car was Citroen C4 Picasso, with centrally mounted instrument panel - so they got used to see driving speed all the time.

There is no reason to have the speed symbol showing, what's confusing is that I always had the speed showing since buying the car, didn't realise there was an alternative, then issues with the battery and suddenly a phone symbol appears and I hadn't changed anything in settings
The other interesting fact is that the car went in to the dealers with the battery issue (they could have changed the settings but I don't see why) but when it came back to me my iphone would not connect to the car (not the cars fault) I had to do a factory reset on the phone, but the phone symbol was always showing.
