Headlamp adjustment - non-Xenon - non-european
Hi all,
Having checked the results for 'headlamp adjustment' I'm only seeing posts relating to the xenon headlamps or people who want to tour europe. I have just the regular halogens on my V70 mk3 and have no travel plans. One of the bulbs failed recently so I replaced it and as the Haynes manual warns, it's now out of adjustment and noticeably 'down' from the other side. Horizontal alignment seems fine, though. Anyway, the garages here are all booked up until 10th October and I need a temp fix so it's enough to see me through to my appointment to get them aligned correctly. I see the adjusters are two black 6mm hex-headed plastic bolts but I don't know which ones do the vertical adjustment. Are they the ones closest to the sides of the car or the others a bit further inboard? Which way should I turn them to raise the lights up a bit? And are there any gotchas (like do the heads snap off if they haven't been turned in a while or whatever?) Thanks. |

There are 2 adjusters accessible from the top if memory serves. I had the same problem, after 8 goes at refitting the bulb it was still too high, got the toolbox out and adjusted it via the adjusters to somewhere near untill I could get it to garage.
I remember buying a small 1/4 inch drive socket set to carry in the car for when the next bulb failed so am thinking it was a smaller socket that was needed 8 or 10 mm prehaps. You should find 2 round holes in the slam panel above the headlamps if memory serves. Paul. OK sorry reread your post and see you have found the adjusters. Take one of them and turn it one way counting the turns while watching what happens to the beam, if the wrong way go back to where you started and repeat in the opposite direction. If wrong adjuster again go back to where you started and try the other one. I think I squirmed some wd 40 in there to make sure but they should move with a little resistance but if siezes or very stiff get the wd 40 in there to avoid damage. Do not use penetrative fluid like duck oil on plastic nuts. I have found it makes them very hard to move and damage is almost certain. The silicon in wd 40 does them no harm and lubricates them. Mine moved with little problem and it's not a mechanism I lubricate regularly. Last edited by green van man; Sep 25th, 2019 at 19:24. |

Park a couple of feet from a wall, start engine and put lights on, adjust vertical screw until light is level with other side. worth putting main beam on to check they are also level, if not it would suggest the bulb you replaced is inserted incorrectly.

My passenger side beam appears to be lower than the driver's side. Its apparent when pulling on the driveway in the night & the lights are pointing at the wall. Where are the adjustment screws on a 2007 S80? It doesn't have xenon lights.
I asked a garage to do it for me whilst I had some work done on the car, but they didn't do a very good job because the beam definitely isn't right. I didn't bother taking it back because I haven't had time, but I could do with sorting the adjustment now that its getting dark earlier.
