87 240 engine/trans swap for 90 740 2.3
I've been offered a cheap crashed 740 and am contemplating swaping its motor and trans for the underpowered b200 motor in my 240 estate. Has anyone done this ? Is it a bolt-in or a major undertaking ? Any input appreciated.

RE: 87 240 engine/trans swap for 90 740 2.3
I believe that this is possible and fairly straightforward, but I haven't done it. The main snag I have heard is that the 740 has a cam-operated distributor at the rear of the timing cover, which would foul the bulkhead in a 240. At Brickboard I have read advice to swap the position to the normal 240, but that assumes that the 740 idler shaft has the necessary gearwheel present to engage the 240 distributor. I have seen a warning that that is not necessarily so.
Also of course unless the fuel/ignition systems are identical you would need to swap over the whole system of computers, sensors, wiring harnesses, etc or else convert the 740 with the bits from the 240, which might take the edge off the power gain? Just my initial thoughts, but someone will be along who knows. Try a search at Brickboard.com. |
