Default Can't turn 240 (k reg) heater off !!

Cannot turn the heater fully off - the switch will push over to cold, which does turn the heat down, but not fully off. Looking at Mr Haynes it appears you can adjust the wires on these ?

Is it easy to get at / do ?

Cheers,

John.

Is your heater turned on and off mechanically? If so you should be able to access the heater tap easily if it is inside the car and even easier if it is under the bonnet. Basically it is operated by a stiff steel wire in a coiled flat wire outer sheath. Slacken the screw clamping the outer to the operating lever bracket. Adjust the outer sheath position so that the valve shuts fully, then retighten the screw to hold the sheath in it's adjusted position.

All the best, Peter

Had similar problem with my '89 240GL- but it looked like the valve was thermostatically controlled. The mechanism seemed to operate over its full range but the valve would still not close fully- not much fun in 35C weather! The thermovalve looked expensive too.....

Being determined not to spend much (well, anything really) I dropped back about 40 years to when one of my former old heaps was built and fitted a tap under the bonnet. To be precise, a rummage in the shed produced an inline 15mm water shut off valve (as used for washing machines etc) which was fitted each side with a stub pipe terminated with an in line yorkshire pipe coupler which provided the right size end (complete with a nice annular bulge) to fit into the existing pipe from head to bulkhead. Add another length of hose from the other side of the valve to the bulkhead, support the whole lot on the bulkhead with a suitable strap to stop it flapping about, and we could go on holiday without frying.

Not exactly ergonomic- you have to lift the bonnet to turn the heater on/off- but it works fine!

:-)

Further update.

The wire seemed o.k & operated in full range, so assumed the valve was at fault. This is the later valve & doesn't have a thermostat on it btw. Got one from Euro car parts for £30 & have fitted it this morning. Will let you know if this has worked !!

Thanks for the replies & I have been told that if the earlier valve plays up you can cut the copper thermo wire & that should stop it still being warm.

cheers

John.
