Tailgate on 245: Can I fit a -90 tailgate to a -83 esta...
Hi there.
My beloved old 245 GLE (B23E/330k) is facing a major rust overhaul, and one of the 'soft spots' is the usual for the 200 series estate: the tailgate. I would like to fit the latest model of tailgate, the one with the glued-in rear window which aligns with the tailgate itself. Do any of you know whether it fits like a baby, or has Volvo changed: the design/shape of the tailgate 'hole' of the body / hinges / latches etc. ? Greetings from Hans in DK. |

It will fit perfectly. The size of the opening was unchanged, and the hinge positions are the same. The only differences are minor; the fittings are black not chrome, and the screenwasher jet may be in a different position. Also the wiring harness and couplings may not be the same.
Be warned, the gate weighs a ton once you unbolt the hinges. Best to sling it from the garage roof. The bolts are not easy to line up with the holes in the hinges, and you don't want to be struggling to support the weight while you jiggle them about. Putting the telescopic struts on first helps too. Good luck, Cliff Pope |

Hi Cliff,
Thanks for the swift answer, 'all' that reminds now is for me to find a tailgate at a scrap yard and then replace it (after having it painted) And yes, I would figure your weight estimate is pretty close ;-) - I've never heard the terms 'lightweight' and 'Volvo' mentioned together. Cheers, Hans |
