Default S60 Pre/Post-Facelift - spec and lane keeping query

Hi all,

Just following on from my recent mention that my mate has bought an S90, I've now got really itchy feet with mine. His car is stunning and I wants it.

Unfortunately, the budget won't stretch to an S90 but it will stretch to a 2012-2014 S60 at a push.

Adaptive Cruise and Geartronic are bare minimum spec for me. So the questions I've got

1) Is the lane keeping proper *active* lane keep assist like on the S90? If so, is this limited to the facelift model, or do all S60's with lane keeping do it?

2) If it's not active lane keeping, what is it? Just a buzzer that goes off if I stray over the white line?

3) What advantages does the facelift bring over pre-facelift? I'm struggling to find really clear comparison photos but I think the newer one has better dash instruments? More fancy graphics etc?

4) The D4 seems to have a lot more choice than the D5 but only marginally less power, and I'd guess, more real world economy? (Edit to add - I'm referring to the D4 190 - there seem to be two versions kicking about, some with just 160bhp)

5) Any other general advice please?

2) I have Lane Departure Warning in my V60 and its exactly that, a buzzer (actually it might be more of a bell?) when you stray over a line without indicating.

3) For me it brought a nicer looking front end. Newer styling on the rear bumper too. Inside its got the TFT dash rather than the mix of analogue and digital centre. This was the main reason I hunted so hard for a facelift. I liked the way it looked far more modern, gave me far more options with how I would like it to look. Can have satnav directions in the centre etc.
Facelift also received chassis and suspension modifications to make it better, although I never drove a prefacelift so can't comment on the differences.

4) How many miles and what type of mileage do you do? The 5cylinder engines are known to be pretty good, but the 4 cylinder D3 and D4 seem to get a lot of EGR problems. I held out for a D5 5 cylinder and love it. My commute is 7 miles, 2-3 miles in town with a fair few stops and then 50mph b roads the rest of the time. I've not had any EGR issues in 9 months of ownership. I'm now a little addicted to the power/torque, "sport" mode on the geartronic gearbox always makes me giggle!

5) If you want a sportier ride go for the R-Design, but if you want smoothness and comfort then definitely opt for an SE or better an SE Lux. I find it is still firmer, especially at lower speeds than my old Rover 75, at motorway speeds though it is utterly brilliant. I have beige interior and a sunroof, I find it makes it feel far roomier and a more luxurious place to be. Winter pack has already proven its worth for the heated windscreen, although I see the elements in the front screen every journey I make which does irk me a little. Heated seats are nice and hot as well
Drivers convenience pack gets you adaptive cruise control. I use it all the time on long trips, it is fantastic, and in traffic really helps to relieve the stress (takes a hell of a jump to trust it first time though!).
If you find one with Xenon lamps, they are worth stretching for, they really are that much better than halogen lamps!! Active high beam and cornering lights are fun and more useful than I thought, fear an horrendous bill if they ever go wrong though.
A Nav model gets a larger centre screen, again makes the interior look better, even if you prefer to use an alternative unit/phone.

I'm sure others will be along with many more comments

Facelift has a much nicer dash, DAB radio, neater headlights and a sat nav you can update with free downloads.

In regard to the VEA (4 cylinder) engines I've not heard of a single DPF problem, maybe the previous poster meant EGR problems? You need to make sure that the necessary rectification work to the EGR and cooler has been undertaken. Mine pulls likes train but never gets anywhere near to the promised MPG figures!

The lane assist noise is more of a swooshing noise, I find it discreet and well modulated. So not annoying when you change lanes intentionally. Unlike the collision warning system, which is a harsh buzzer. I find find it so distracting that it is more likely to cause an accident through distraction.

I would rather not have the adaptive cruise control as it intervenes extremely early, with little clue unless you are staring at the speedo all the time. It's particularly annoying show piece is snatching the brakes when the car (still some distance) ahead follows a curve in the road.

Thanks for the comments guys, all very useful info.

I've totally written off the idea of a pre-facelift now, although have had my attention captured by a 2015 S80, I'm just waiting on confirmation from the dealer about a couple of points. It seems to have all the stuff I'm after including Harmon Kardon etc.
