240 bodywork
Hi
I am working on replacing the front bodywork of a 1986 240gl- wings, bonnet, slam panel, front panel etc, which have previously been replaced following accident damage some years ago- and have two questions:- 1. Are all of these panels bolt on, as they appear to be? 2. The leading front edge of the bonnet I have with the car has a continuous slight curve shape, however, I notice that some other 240 bonnets have a step in the centre- can anyone confirm what the correct shape of bonnet is for this car? Any advice greatly appreciated. S |

RE: 240 bodywork
I think they are all bolt-on. Nothing I've ever seen has suggested otherwise to me.
From 1981, they all had the 'stepped' out bonnet lid. Before 1981, it was only the super luxury(!) 260's with the dreaded PEV motors. Obviuosly, the radiator grills were different. Andy (262C, 1980) |

RE: 240 bodywork
Thanks Andy,I think that this confirms my suspicion that the car has been fitted with second hand replacement panels from an earlier model, altho' the light and indicator units are from the later, post 1981 models- I'm not sure about the grill, could you tell me what the key differences are?
Also do you know if the front wings, slam panel, front panel and bumper differ between the pre and post 1981 models? Thanks again. S |

RE: 240 bodywork
From memory having fairly recently dismantled one, everything does bolt together. There may be a few pop rivits around the lights.
There are 3 (at least) different bonnet shapes. The old continuous curve, the extreme jutting kind (very American) and the later very slightly jutting kind. I don't think all the slam panels are intermixable with the bonnets, but 1 and 3 may be. There are also chrome/black trim variations which were sometimes just options and sometimes specific to the different fronts. Of course some models had chrome trim around the wing edge. Did earlier wings have holes for the repeater indicators? Hope this helps. |
