The thing is when they re solder the joints, they only re-solder a few, so although the unit may still not work, its not necessarily their fault.

A cut down hacksaw works fine-no need to butcher the joint.
Captive washers easily removed with a thin nail.
Standard soldering iron works fine- use electrical solder that is ready fluxed.
Solder all the pins as post etc. (right hand side of the box)
