Job done! reverted to plan A. removed release bearing and fork, slackened of pressure plate to allow friction plate to move slightly,Inserted gearbox with a bit of maneuvering, tightened pressure plate, removed gearbox and re attached release bearing with fork, re inserted gearbox and tightened everything up. There's nothing you can't do if you put your mind to it!. At my age there are twenty ounces to a pound, these gearboxes are heavy!

Good job. But does this mean that you need to pull the transmission when you pull the motor?
No wonder you have those lifting rings. |

In my experience with 144 B20 and PV B16 unless you have lifting ramp it's easier and quicker to pull and re install the engine and gearbox as one unit.

Back home again! Now comes the good bit where I get to lie under the car with oil dripping on my face. A good tip if you are doing this job. When refitting engine attach mounts loosely to engine so that they can wriggle about a bit to fit into slots on cross member .Also tie up the exhaust pipe so that the flange doesn't get trapped under starter motor.

At this stage left hoist attached and raised rear of engine up against trans' tunnel. this makes it easier to couple up gearbox mounting by raisin or lowering slightly to allow holes to align for bolt insertion. All fastened up now, hoist removed, ring bolts removed and replaced with head studs and torqued down to 65lb.
Bluespray, the ring bolts are stainless, obtained from ships chandlers, threaded part removed and then welded to head bolts/studs. Very secure.

Almost there. Now the question is, will she run? Watch this space (but don't hold your breath)

Bummer. I have a horrible feeling that the rear felt seal is leaking. If so will probably need to pull engine again to re do. Does any body know any thin about tallow cord? I've heard it mentioned as a replacement for the felt.

Pulled the engine and this is what I found, leaking blanking cap not the felt seal. Just as well that I have ordered both cap and felt just in case
