Same issue here, I read somewhere on the forums there's a chip that knackers itself on the circuit board and resoldering it can repair it.

The HU850 in my 2005 XC70 has been acting up for a couple of months.

Sometimes I get in the car, start the car up and it works fine - sometimes it takes several minutes before it suddenly works - and then everything works (perhaps not the CD - not using it so have never tried it).

I've noticed that when it's warm it's liable to work, when it's cold outside (and in the car), that's when it sometimes doesn't work when I start the car but so far (knock on wood) it always works after a couple of minutes.

Once it does that I can turn the car or radio off (for a couple of hours) and when I start the car again or turn on the radio it always works.

I suspect a dry or cracked solder joint and when the radio gets warm, that expands enough to make good contact.

Getting to the point where I am looking for a Double DIN replacement but with installation, that's looking at £300+ and I'll only do that if I can re-install the original radio if I decide to sell it.

Which I am not looking at - had it for two years, paid silly money and it's been running like a proverbial Swiss watch and looks like new inside and out.

Another reason why I haven't is I can't find an installer where I live (Cambridge area) apart for Halfords and I'm not inclined to go there.

Just to let folk know. I've fixed this - eventually just got fed up, stripped the unit down, did some diagnostics and replaced some bits including adding a small heatsink to the power regulators. Re-assembled.

HU-850 working a treat again now!

Hi Nick what were the fault symptoms ? My HU850 just the FM stops working intermittently. CD player still works, bluetooth via the CD changer port still works too. So as others have posted, looks like the output stages are still working. I've already re-soldered the 1 ohm resistors below the two power transistors (2SD1760).

Next step - if anyone ever figures out how to get HU850 lighting working again would be on to a winner!
