The location of the button is also a bit of an annoyance for me but I guess the main reason for it's positioning is to make it next to impossible to activate accidentally.

If it was in the centre console somewhere near the gearstick there's always the possibility of the driver or passenger accidentally leaning on the button, and it isn't just a parking brake locking the rear wheels - If the car's in motion and you press (and hold) the button it acts as an emergency brake on all 4 wheels, so you're gonna come to a rather dramatic halt.

The only circumstance I can think of when this emergency stop function might be of use is if the driver has a seisure/collapses at the wheel. Consequently, the fact that the switch is completely inaccesible to anyone in the car other than the driver seems complete nonsense.

Here's the mnemonic I use for remembering which way the electric parking brake works:
'Can I PULL it OFF? I'ld like to PUSH ON'.

I must be alone then in having absolutely no issue with either the placement or operation of the EPB switch. Also alone in being able to see the logic and sense in placing it wher they have and the fact that you push for on, pull for off.

Enjoy it while you can. Hopefully the new XC/V/S60s will follow the XC90 in moving it to where it should be, and have it work the way that makes sense.

No he's not! I wasn't going to bother posting that I have no problem with the operation or position of the brake button, but since WM has done so I will agree with him. . It's nice the brake comes off automatically, but quite frankly I have no desire for it to reset automatically.
I could sound off about far worse idiosyncrasies on the Volvo...but I've been there before

The positioning of the epb in a Renault Laguna tucked in neatly in the centre console, presented no more risk of it being accidentally initiated than where it is in the XC60. The control isn't a toggle on /off button but a lever, isn't it? Anyway, for safety reasons, Having to push to release and grasp and pull, (difficult to do accidentally) in order to activate is the safer option, I would think. My short arms mean I have to lean forward somewhat to grasp the XC60 EPB lever.
