Default First breakdown

27 months and 34k and my V70 D5 let me down

Fuel starvation was the cause.

This filter is invoiced 2018 at 60k, now 98k showing but had a 2013 date on manufacture.Mileage back then was 35k according to my paperwork from previous owners.

I think the 2018 invoice is fibbing,

I change my fuel filter every two years, regardless of miles.

The filter looks dark, but it will be being diesel. I’ve seen much worse than that filter to be honest, as the filter usually shrivels/squashes when it hasn’t been changed in a long time.

Is this invoice - assuming you have or saw one - from VOLVO dealer? Or some garage down the road?

Previous owners local Garage Down the road.

I do have Volvo invoices for the cabin filter, twice when i swapped it the filter was from the year of manufacture. 2008
I have experience of other main dealers invoicing for work not done and invoicing genuine and fitting Crosland (euro car parts only)

I believe this to be a lucrative revenue stream for dealers/garages

I have used the same trusted independent for over 10 years. I generally buy the service parts and fluids myself and take them over to him in the boot of the car. If he replaces other parts he always shows me the old one taken off (out of interest more than proof). We have a good working relationship - he will be sorely missed when he retires.

In the same way when I get new tyres I ALWAYS take the wheels off, clean the rims both sides, remove the old weights and take the wheels down to the tyre shop in the boot of another car. That way the tyre place knows the quality of work I expect and that any damage will be seen straight away. Again - I've been using the same tyre shop for 10+ years and I we have a good working relationship.

On the very few occasions that I’ve taken a family member’s car to a dealer because they’ve been concerned about keeping the warranty, I’ve marked the key service items first (sign the oil filter with a metal scribe, Sharpie on the air filter etc).

This has caught out main dealers in the past. Renault Cardiff (yes happy to name the scumbags) charged the earth to service my Mother’s Megane in 1999 including £5 for a sachet of screen wash (I’d filled to the brim before taking it there), yet my signature was still on the oil and air filter. I got the dealer manager out to the car park and he turned on the embarrassed excuses. Full refund and I already had the stamp in the book, so ended up doing the service myself for a fraction of the cost.

That’s why when you do a job yourself, you know its been done.

I understand that not everyone can for a multitude of reasons, but I don’t like dealerships. Shoddy work & ridiculous prices… some are good, but they’re few & far between.

I look after my own work now but i am galled how in the early lives the service history and invoices are proving to be taking the P.

Order seems to be restored and all running fine, 200 mile run down to Shropshire and back tomorrow.

Probably very annoying but equally reassuring that it was a maintenance issue and not a mechanical weakness... ?

Uhm...

Let's just say that I do service my car yearly at VOLVO dealer's for a reason - and always top up with quality fuel (Shell, Total, Aral etc.) either.

And no: have not checked dates marks etc. on various consumable items that are supposedly being changed with each service, at least I did not have to yet...
