Underside Of Door Frames:~
Volvo 240 1988 Estate: ~
Whist doing some other work on the car I noticed some rusting on the underside of the driver’s door. All the doors had been treated inside the panels with oil diluted wax treatment-some time back- these doors have the drain holes at both ends and being quite small it is important to make sure that any entering water can freely escape. Fortunately the rust areas where quite small and only effecting the frame surface and some draught excluder channel. The surrounding rubber is held in a sort of “C” channel that in turn is spot welded to the door frame- the joint section for the rubber is under the door in a central position. Ease the rubber out of the holder pulling it away gently and tape it out of the way for the next process. Clean all the rust away to bright metal and treat with your favourite rust preventer etc. I use Jenolite and when dry a couple of coats of Zink rich primer. The top colour coat is generally purchased from the paint factors- mixed etc. approximately 200ml size that can be brushed on in this situation. Once all the above is complete use the wax treatment to cover the inner channel sections prior to replacing the rubber- push the back of this in first and ease the same in from the front (small blunt screwdriver will work fine) It is worth going to the top of all the door frames and ease the rubber away from the door whilst working in Waxoyl/other into the hidden gaps with a paint brush- do this for the full door surrounds including the whole underside of the door frame- include the boot. The excess is easily cleaned away with a little white spirit. Trust it helps Regards Bob. |
