Arrow Driving in Denmark & Sweden

It will soon be the 50th 'birthday' of my 131 so my old friend and I are planning to drive her from Sussex to the Volvo Museum to celebrate, though our wives think it has little to do with the car and is just an old blokes' road trip (they are partly right).

Does anyone know how road, tunnel and bridge tolls are paid (we don't speak Scandiwegian) driving via Denmark to Sweden? We are familiar with the route through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany but no further north.

Also, are there any restrictions on such old cars and will we need any permits or screen stickers?

Many thanks.

(Sorry if this gets posted twice but when I checked the first attempt had not been posted)

You should get in touch with the AA or RAC. They will have all the info.

I would drive via (G) Hamburg-Flensburg-(DK)Kolding-Kopenhavn-(till here only bridges) - Helsingoer/Helsingborg (ferry, you have to pay, cash or credit card. You won't need a reservation.)) (S)- Goeteborg. (I don't like the bridge from Kopenhavn to Malmoe. Expensive toll required)
The second way is to the north of Denmark and the ferry from Frederikshavn to Goeteborg. Expensive and you will need a reservation.

In Sweden there is only one way to pay: With credit-card! No cash, cash is a no-no in sweden. Check in front the validation of your card in sweden.

No permits or stickers till now. Only the GB on the back or the europian number plate with the GB in blue on the plate.

have a nice tripp, everyone will be kindly/happy to see you in a Amazon!
Espacially in Denmark and Sweden.

If you need help with your car between Hamburg and Flensburg sent me a note.
(Nobody needs help with a good amazon ;-) )

regards, Kay

I think you have the answer on the tolls issue.
I took my 1964 P1800S 3 years ago on this route.
"The Bridge" must be your choice, yes expensive but an experience, due to its tunnel and bridge combination linking two countries: you might want to do this route on at least one way.
I just have the classic chrome GB initials on the back of my car and no one batted an eyebrow.
Happy travelling!

I would most certainly avoid Holland at the moment. The traffic has gotten really busy recently - they say because of the booming economy. On the A1 going from west to east for example there seem to be daily traffic jams. If you must go through Holland avoid travelling on Sundays (the trucks start to pile up as you get closer to Germany because they are not allowed to drive there on Sundays), Tuesdays and Thursdays are also busy traffic days because that's the start and end of the working week here (!)

Yes, I have to agree traffic can be very heavy in Holland at peak times.
Back on the country identification plate issue, here is a photo of my car as a reference.

Yes, you have to do The Bridge (Oresund) at least one way. I think it was about 35 Euros in 2008 but well worth he experience. All done by card. Enjoy your trip and the Museum. Brilliant.
Let us know how you get on.

Got to do The Bridge.
Wave to Saga if you see a green 911.

I forgot something almost.
In Denmark and Sweden is a important rule:
You have to drive with low beam on daylight too!
Driving with parking light or driving light isn't tolerable
good night, Kay

As you see I really have neglected this thread so my apologies and my thanks to all those who responded above.

We did it and it went without a hitch. As it was a road trip we avoided ferries so drove from Sussex to the tunnel then Calais to Hamburg and up through Denmark and across the bridges into Sweden then up to Gothenburg.

Great reception by Lise-Lotte Kolmburger, the Volvo Museum customer relations manager, then returned by the same route.

We did the 2200 miles in less than five days without a hitch. We were stopped by three very apologetic Danish policemen in a village who just wanted a good look at the car as she looked like new.

It was brilliant and highly recommended.
