Automatic gear box issues
Hello again
The vehicle is a 2011 XC60 D5 Just recently purchased this car Sometimes when you put the car into drive there is a significant clunk/snatch and lurch forward which is alarming. Sometimes its quite smooth and normal Any thoughts why please and could this be a major problem? Thank you |

First thing to try would be a fluid change

A not uncommon issue.
Step 1 is a gearbox fluid change with the correct fluid (as specified in the factory owners manual). If step 1 doesn’t resolve it, there is a software update specifically for this issue but you will have to get that done at a main dealer or Volvo authorised independent. In many cases, including my own, this does fix the issue completely. It may feel counter intuitive that a computer software change could resolve what instinct would say is a mechanical issue, but it’s all to do with how the gearbox uses hydraulic pressure to control the shifting and how it adapts when the gearbox warms up and the fluid viscosity changes…. Or just get both of the above done at the same time, likely cost I.r.o. £300.

There's a really silly reason this may happen, you're too fast for the selector button, try it by making a conscious effort to have it fully held before you select a mode and also to keep it depressed until you feel the gear engage.
It's probably not this but hey cost nowt to rule out. |

If it's the jolt only when selecting 'D' from 'N' or 'P' and it only happens when hot then there may be a software update and adaptions procedure solution for a couple of hundred quid (needs VIDA so main Dealer or Indy Volvo specialist job). If that doesn't work then it's seals which is a gearbox out job which will be expensive.
Some people just live with it as it doesn't seem to affect other shifting while driving. If you have just purchased the car from a dealer that would be my first port of call on the basis that the fault existed at point of purchase. |

Automatic gear box issues
Gentlemen
Thank you for all your replies The jump can really any time when hot or cold but doesn’t seem to effect the performance of the gear change , it seems to happen one in 5 selections. My local garage can change the gear box oil but only Volvo can do the updates. The only problem is that they want £144 to even do a diagnostic check before any draining is carried out. Would you go to the independent first , have the fluid changed, tell Volvo Stourbridge and then run their own diaganostic and do the updates. I know £300 has been suggested but I think this will end up much more if I go to a dealer or just live with it . The XC60 has done 124K |

I'd live with it for now if it's occasional rather than every time, rather than it be the box it could be the engine idle isn't steady at the time so you might effectively be shoving it into gear causing a semi stall, try this, if you haven't had it done yet fit new fuel and air filters, add a fuel treatment to the fuel and take it for a nice long drive where you can be at 70 consistently and squirt it now and again, you could just be a bit gummed up at the moment due to use patterns, however if it gets more frequent then you need to get it it looked at. One other thing comes to mind, do you park on a hill at all and if so or even on the flat do you engage the handbrake before putting it into P, if you don't handbrake first you put all the weight on the gearbox pawl and this can appear as a jerk and the shift itself will feel stiffer than normal. |

That’s good advice and let’s see how it goes, by fuel treatment I guess you mean a bottle of diesel Redex and yes we will be going on a long journey shortly.
The vehicle is parked on a slope and I will put the handbrake on before engaging park as you suggest. Many thanks Mark |
