Default Volvo 850 Interior Light Problem

Hi,

My 1996 850 TDI does not illuminate the interior roof lights when the car is unlocked and the door is opened. They work fine on their own.

I’ve also noticed that the driver’s door button will work to lock the driver’s door, but won’t lock all doors. If you gently pull back the door handle with the driver’s door locked, then it will lock all the doors.

I’m therefore wondering if the two could be related, and I’m thinking there could be some kind of microswitch in the door which may be causing this, but I thought that I would check to see if anyone had any other ideas here first.

Thanks in advance,

Joe

These threads may be worth a read.

Admittedly these refer to the Ph1 V70 but it's possible the 850 may not be so very different.

Thanks Martin, I’ll take a look at them.

I’ve also noticed that when I use the remote to lock it, it doesn’t seem to ‘arm’ itself (IE the second click and flash), so I wonder if all are related. I’ll look at the links you’ve sent, thanks again 👍

I'd say it's highly likely to be related. The microswitches on the door locks also tell the alarm system when the doors are closed.

My problem was that the microswitches on the drivers door and the rear offside passenger weren't operating reliably.

On my V70, the issue was that the red door marker lights weren't going out when the doors were shut. Since you can't see them when the doors are shut, this was flattening the battery and the alarm wasn't setting.

On investigation, it was clear that there wasn't anything wrong with the microswitches themselves. They are extremely reliable but there was some wear on either the switch button or the surface that operates it. This meant that the switch button wasn't moving far enough to work the switch reliably.

A couple of pieces of self adhesive aluminium tape on the surface that operates the switch took up the wear and they've worked perfectly ever since. The author of one of the threads used insulating tape to do the same job. I prefer the aluminium stuff because it deosn't go gooey and is very tenacious.

The hardest part of the job was extracting the lock operating mechanism; it's fiddly rather than difficult.

Hope this is of some help.

Fantastic Martin, thanks so much. I’ll give it a go. I’m in two kinds of whether I will keep the car or sell it on, I did buy it to sell on but I love my 850s, and would like it to be all sorted before I think of advertising it.
