Default 99 V70 Radiator

Fitted a new radiator today on our 1999 V70 2.4 20v non turbo.
New radiator did not have the 9mm take off back to the expansion tank.
Does any one know what it does please as I've blanked it off for now.
Oh, and before you ask the new rad is second hand so I can't take it back.
Many thanks 😁

It's been quite a few years since I replaced the leaking rad in my V70 with one that I salvaged from my dead 850. The 850 didn't have the little expansion tube so I just screwed a bolt into the end of the pipe in the V70 and added a jubilee clip to be sure. The V70 has run fine like that for all those years, so I've no idea what it is supposed to do but the car seems OK without it.

Many thanks for your reply. That is almost exactly what I've done except I haven't used a bolt.
I had an old temp sender so used that with a jubilee clip.
Like you said it runs okay but just curious what it is.
Seems to me it is one of two things,
A kind of bypass for pressure or some kind of air separator at the top of the radiator which aids in refilling the system.
If anyone knows please let me know?
Many thanks,
James.. 👍👍

Sounds like you have a pre 98 rad, they had the take off on top of the thermostat housing rather than the radiator

Thanks for your reply.
Yes I would think you are right that it is a pre 98 rad.
Runs okay except it gets air locks when filling up.
They work away eventually.
In guessing that would be the only down side.
Did think about making my own take off?
