Default Strange metallic noises

Hey guys,
First, the car: V70 (L) XC -2000, 193 hp petrol manual gearbox.

I have encountered some strange noises coming from the car. Sound like its from either/both the engine compartment and below the car.
The engine runs fine and smooth but I am not currently driving it.
After a while on idle the noise goes away but comes back when throttling or turning the engine off and back on.

I have provided a video with sound to demonstrate it. Any idea what it can be?
Was told it could be the starter motor so that one is changed for a new one but the noise remains.

https://vimeo.com/332845818

Thanks!

It is difficult the hear the noise on a recorded video like this, but I can suggest two things that it could be, as the noise is a random metallic rattle;

1) Most likely, this is a loose heatshield on the downpipe or near the front of the exhaust system under the car. The noise sounds like something rattling until is finally jams itself from the vibration into a position away from the exhaust.

2) Have you checked the drivebelts and all the covers on the righthandside of the engine (your passenger side in Sweden)? You might need to release the top plastic cover away from the engine first, then start the engine and listen for the noise coming from withing the timing belt area.

Thanks for the reply. I will remove the covers of the drivebelts tomorrow and see what I find.
Will also look for a loose heatshield or something.

Hi Empa81

And if you don't find anything, I would suspect something driven by the auxiliary belt.

Air conditioning pump
Alternator
Power steering pump
Tensioner

If you can't tell which component is making the noise, draw a diagram of the path of the belt, then remove it completely, and see if the noise stops.

Please let us know what you find.

Hope that helps,
Steve

thats pretty serious , something rotating seizes up and then frees , It could be , turbocharger , alternator , or any of the cam/aux belt pulleys , or even the variable cam pulleys , it depends were the noise comes from , Best get it towed to the garage , don't drive it ..

Small update: removed some crap and started listening. It comes from somewhere within the red circle in the picture.
I also noted a small looseness in the VVT (see film). When I turned the engine off I could press that one back in like 2 mm.

And btw don't these cam wheels or whatever they are called look kind of new?

The pulleys don't get dirty in there ..
Well , it seems it is either the variable cam pulley or the turbocharger , I have heard a turbocharger sound like that before ... Try taking the turbo inlet hose off and push and pull the turbine wheel inside , there should be no in and out axial play but there should be a small amount of up and down radial play ..

Does it only make this noise when first started from cold or on every start of the engine?

If only from cold I'll hazard a guess at it being an exhaust manifold or downpipe gasket. Check all studs are present and look for hairline cracks in the manifold and turbo.

If it happens on every start then it's probably something more sinister, as Clan says, such as the turbo compressor damaged or something failing on the cam belt side.

As this is the xc version. Could it be all wheel drive shaft playing up. These are notorious for seizing or going wrong. The sound can easily travel anywhere and fool you!

Hmm any way to "disable" the 4wd to see if the noise stops?
