Default Rear number plate fixing

I bought a new set of plates as the old ones were looking rather scruffy. The rear plate was stuck on with tape and I have removed all the tape residue with various potions and cleaned the paintwork up.

I am thinking about a tailgate respray later this year so don't want to use tape on the new plate. There are two holes where you can screw a plate in and the holes are filled with some sort of mastic.

Has anyone screwed into these, if so is it just the normal screw that comes with number plate fixings?

The tailgate trim is off at the moment for another job and it appears there are 'receptacles' for the screws, it is the grey thing left of the yellow foam. The red is not rust it is a sound proofing pad.

Ta

I think you will find that what you refer to as mastic is the remains of plastic number plate screws that have sheared off. Drill the "mastic" out and you will then be able to use plastic number plate screws to hold your new plates. That is probably why your old ones were held on with tape.

Lots of plates are now fixed on with tape, save drilling holes...
Easy for thieves though...
