Default New 460 Owner!

Hi Folks,

Just saying a quick hello, I'm new around these parts!

As of tomorrow, there'll be a '91 460 Turbo sitting on the drive. I'll use it for a couple of weeks as my daily to get an idea of what's what, then it'll be mostly staying in a garage until October. It will be Mrs Boaty's winter car, (she plays with our Eunos Roadster in the summer months), but it won't have a hard life by any means - I cosset all of our cars to within an inch of their lives, and it won't be used in nasty weather, we have a Lexus RX for the bad stuff. She also uses the Lexus for long trips, so the mileage will be kept down on the 460 - which will be nice as it's only done 40k.

It's entirely original save for the alloys, and I've not really got any notions of changing much - I'll put an all-singing Alpine head unit in, and the back box is not long for this world so a stainless job is on the cards. Does anyone have any suggestions for sympathetic upgrades or preventative measures to keep the old boy in tip-top form?

Looking forward to finding my way around here!

Just the usual, with every car that comes into my care, regardless of service history - a full service. Cambelt tentioners idlers etc. Been caught too many times by dodgy garages. (not saying where you got it from is dodgy just letting you know my reasons for this practice).

Maybe do a cylinder pressure test (my 18 year old 1.8 had only done 32k when I pulled it out of retirement and the head gasket had gone a bit mouldy for some reason) and check that everything works as it should - drive it daily for a week to identify intermittent problems and feed it super unleaded once in a while to clear carbon out tue the engine, maybe Italian tune up when shes up to temprature.

Thats all I can think of in terms of sympathetic maintenance...stainless exhaust is a good one too

Welcome to the quiet world of 400 series ownership

If you arent aware - take a peek at 480-club-europe they have really good advice regarding the engines and platforms

Hey, and welcome

Glad someone picked up that beastie.

I replied in the sales thread, saying I have a 460 Turbo also, the last CD spec auto left on the road!

Right, mods...

Firstly, as Anadinolin says, get over to 480 Club Europe and have a nosey around the forums as there is a wealth of info on there. The 440/60/80 all share near identical running gear.

Simple mods I would do are:

-30mm suspension springs and Bilstien dampers to stiften things up a little and improve the stance.

Stainless exhaust is a good call, you may even be able to bin the cat if it's a pre 93.

But the best mod you can do in my opinion is to get a "Richmod" or "Robou" modified ECU.
They bump the standard power from a less than impressive 120bhp to around 170, maybe a little more with a decent exhaust.
Plenty of info on the other site, so go and have a good look

Steve

Thanks Chaps! I gave Victor a quick sponge this morning, but I'll detail him properly when I get chance. Got a few 'Sunday morning jobs' to do to get him fully up to speed...

Does scrub up well doesn't it?

Those wheels suit it really well too, just needs a slight drop

Oh, and a remapped ecu... Proper sleeper!

Another nice little mod is the egg-crate grille from a 440, needs a little fettling to make it fit, but it looks pretty good in my opinion

Here's a link to mine, can't get photobucket to work properly from the phone!

New number plates are a massive improvement! Will also be adding a period NOS AA badge to the grille later on today which I think will suit him rather well. Another late night eBay adventure, but this time I had to dig deeper in the old pockets...

Bit of a major spanner in the works though - Mrs Boaty has just got yet another promotion at work, and now qualifies for a lease car at such an idiotically low cost that it would be daft to pass up. She's looking at a four seat folding roof job (we're busily browsing brochures) as her sole all year round car, and for the first time since we met she'll be escaping my world of modern classics. This means that the cars I justify via her use (the Eunos Roadster and the Volvo) are likely to be on sticky ground. I won't rush into any decisions, we have space and garages, and the lease could be a good while in materialising as we'll be ordering a bespoke spec...but here's an advance heads up that if anyone here fancies a 460 Turbo there just may be one available.

Not a clue is the honest answer to that! I know how much he owes me, but of course that's neither here nor there. I bought him because I've known him throughout his time with the previous owner, saw him most days, knew exactly what he was and wasn't, and had coveted him from the first day I met him. When the Honda was written off thus giving me both justification and floating funds, I didn't hesitate. I'm sure I paid too much in theory, but I got a £1000 payout on a car I'd owned for six trouble free years and only paid £700 for in the first place - so I just thought of it as effectively swapping one car for another.

Like any other classic piece it's going to be worth whatever someone is prepared to pay. I'm totally open to any suggestions or negotiation and certainly won't be offended by any objective input. As I said before I have space and garages so he's warm and comfortable...and I'm still enjoying fettling him! The AA badge looks brilliant. He's just not going to have an actual use with the advent of the lease car, and I'm a strong believer in cars being used.
