V70 T5 - Definitively - which Spark Plugs ?
Firstly apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but I'm genuinely going round in circles with this.
I've a 1997 V70 T5. I realise that I can buy 5 'Volvo' plugs for around £55 but surely there are equally well performing equivalents out there at half the price ? Aren't these made by Bosch ? Any thoughts ? |

Mines not a T5 so may be different, but 5 Volvo plugs for mine were about the same price as 5 Bosch type from Eurocarparts.

Answered this in an update on my build log. Copied below.
A word on spark plugs. If you live a fair distance from the dealer like me, or if you don't want to pay the ridiculous RRP (£60!!!!!), there are a range of suitable aftermarket plugs - despite what lots of people on various forums will tell you. There is no need to "buy genuine or it breaks or wont run". The OE plug for these on release was the Champion RC8PYP. If you look on any sparkplug crossreference site, such as this one you'll find a lot of decent options. Of these, the Bosch FR7DP is recommended (which is likely the OE plug now since Volvo changed the supplier), or NGK PFR6Bs. These can both be had for around £35 or cheaper from good motor factors. My car was running on PFR6Bs for a very long time and I had no issues.

Hi, I agree with Cookeh, I always use NGK or Bosch and purchase from ebay.

Wouldn't trust eBays fitment guide - even they state its not entirely accurate and more of a suggested fit.
Look in your owners manual in the specification section, look at what the OE plugs for your car are, go on sparkplug-crossreference and type in the part number. Then pick an NGK (best) or Bosch (OE) option based on that. If you're worried about fit, google the height, hex size, thread of the manual recommended ones and compare it to whatever plug you're looking at now. The crossreference site does this for you too.

No worries. Would be careful about eBay though, surprisingly there are fake plugs around, and Bosch is the main target. I was looking at around £28 for the FR7DPs from an average of three motor factors (not crappy ECP or GSF).
Do let us know how you get on with them though - and if they are genuine pop a link to them in here and I'll grab a couple for future changes!!

I'm all too aware of fake eBay items mate, I don't intend to just install them and forget.
I'll be examining them and cross referencing with images supplied by Bosch. If found to be fake I'll pursue the seller and strongly suggest eBay restrict or close their account otherwise they may find themselves complicit to a fraud. I'm getting sick of this now. |
