I just got off the phone with the dealer. The car has not shown a problem, nor had the replacement, but if it does show issues, it will be covered under the warranty.
For the duration of the warranty.....!

They are prepping it for me with new brake pads, tyres, etc.....

I know what my plan is now....!

So after 12 months you need to decide whether to take an extended warranty and also if this covers you in the (unlikely ?) event Volvo UK 'decline' an expensive EGR repair.
The problem is, it's only a rumour that EGR repairs will be 'covered' after the Volvo warranty expires. The earliest 3-year terms expired in late 2016 (the VEA engines entered production week 46 2013), so ... well we just have to see.

How many miles has it done, out of curiosity? If it's done over 20,000 miles per year, there's a chance it may not have needed the EGR fixes, because there were a few high-mile / mostly motorway driving owners that didn't report problems until they'd done 30K+ miles, because the EGR is most active at town speeds. But nonetheless, they still had problems - they just took longer to develop.

As it's a 2014 car I would personally be willing to bet my own money that it has had at least one replacement EGR & cooler, and that the dealer is telling you a porkie.

For what it's worth, I would suggest that you insist the dealer states in writing to you that the 12-month Select warranty specifically covers the EGR, EGR cooler, and all related engine sensors. Tell them that you're making it a condition of the sale, because you are aware of the problems the D4 engine has had with its EGR systems.

If the dealer is confident the car has never had a problem, and confident in the warranty, they should give you that in writing.

I do 30-35k miles per year. My Jan 2015 built V60 D4 VEA developed EGR issues at 45k. Now approaching 85k and no signs of any other gremlins. Won’t be confident that it won’t rear its head again until I am well north of 100k though!

Since getting the Amber warning, I have found that another V90 D4 owner has experienced a similar problem.
Yesterday, I read that Volvo have decided to use AdBlue:

Will this finally resolve EGR and Sensor problems?

Any idea of the date of that Pdf? I can't find any reference to any VEA Volvo car engine using AdBlue.

The opposite in fact.

Quote:
Volvo has selected lean NOx traps (LNTs) for its Euro 6 diesels. The technology has been integrated into the firm's VEA engine family which will be launched in 2014MY applications including the D-segment S60 sedan and XC60 SUV.

The aftertreatment technology is close-coupled for rapid light-off and was favoured over selective catalytic reduction (SCR) because it is maintenance-free.

Volvo's VEA programme director, Jan-Erik Larsson, said: “We will have an LNT on everything. Not having SCR is a convenient factor for the customer because they don't need to fill up the additive tank.”

The firm designed the latest diesel in-house from a clean-sheet. The 1,969cc all-aluminium engine uses several different boosting systems depending on the rating and application but all of them feature an LNT and a diesel particulate filter – the canning is similar to the one used on the gasoline engines which share the same architecture. The aftertreatment system was developed together with Tier One supplier Emitec.

SCR systems are capable of higher NOx conversion rates but the need to periodically replenish the urea additive tank is one downside to the technology; they are also more expensive than LNTs.

If Volvo wanted to meet growing demand for diesel vehicles in the US, upgrading to SCR might be necessary to meet Tier II BIN 5 emissions legislation, and integrating the technology should be relatively straightforward because the system is a modular design. “We can quite easily go into that market with SCR, but we will need to wait to see when the market is ready in the US,” Larsson said.

With series-sequential turbocharging Volvo's VEA diesel develops 133kW and 400Nm from 1,750-2,500rpm. Coupled to a six-speed manual transmission it enables the updated S60 to achieve fuel consumption and emissions figures of 3.8 litres/100km and 99g/km CO2.
We have reached our first service and no EGR issues, or any other, so far.

Roy

Thanks Tem. Presumably it is an engine revision due sometime in 2018 going by the date on the price list. Current diesel engines are all LNT in the showroom cars.

Seems odd looking at the price list to see no relation between tax and carbon emissions after it being the norm for so long.

As has been said before, the incentive to buy a low carbon emission vehicle has largely disappeared.

I was getting my car serviced at the time, I read the article.
I spoke to the Branch Manager about it and he said that he knew about the plan to use AdBlu, but said that all the new XC60’s did not use it.
As you say, it may be introduced in 2018?
